Maybe a collaboration where people from the same area could work together as well, like California Team, or even Orange County Team.
What if people don't live in a certain place, bu lived there before, for a while. might broaden the spectrum?

I guess teams can form as representation rather than exact location. You could be living in Minnesota but you can choose to represent the Arizona team or something equivalent.

I'd totally be down for a "World Tour Contest" type of thing, where you could pick a location for mapping sounds radical.

This idea sounds really cool, but it looks impossible to set up with the time given. If you take into account the validation of the idea, the time to make the announcment, the time for the exprienced people to roll in and to start mapping, the redistribution, and the detailing and the stitching back together, it can't be done in 4 weeks in my opinion.

However I have to admit that the idea sounds cool, and that an april fools little contest would be great.

Here's an Idea: an Exquisite Corpse-style Contest. Everyone who wants to join is divided into groups with ~10 mappers each. The first mapper in the chain maps the first area of a map, then sends it to the next mapper. The second mapper adds to this, then cuts out their section and places it in a new file. This is then sent to the next mapper, and the cycle continues until the layout of the map is done. Then, the remaining mappers have each block divided between them to detail.

The first mapper in the chain can decided the gamemode, but everything beyond that is decided by the following mappers.

Here's a chart in case I explained this badly.

Any additional nitty-gritty details can be sorted out by whoever wants to run this beast, but that's the main if it. I'd love some feedback if anyone wants to give it.

Why not a Special Delivery contest with unique theme (Japanese/Maritime City/Spytech/..) ?
Half of Doomsday is useless, it could be interesting to make the Australium case pickup fun !

They seem to be moving away from gamemode-specific contests because people don't like restrictions.

Wasn't the last major contest a Payload-only one?

Unless there was some discussion on the Discord (which I never check), I don't really see where your coming from.

It was all discord discussion and it was a decision made because of people how not as many people joined or how people complained. This was true for Connect 5 as well.

Maybe a "Dynamic Details" contest? Where the player can find a number of interactive map elements that affect other things in the map?

Here's an idea: A contest where every entry has to be a mix of two gamemodes. For example, an Attack-Defense map where the final point is a 60-second KotH. It can be as outlandish as you want it to be (Like a KotH / Arena Hybrid) or as simple (5CP Tug of War payload) as possible.

Entries would be judged on a scale of 0 to 100, where 35 points are dedicated to the gamemode's creativity, 30 points to the complexity (The more layers and logic, the better), and 35 to the map design.

It would create more new game modes, and show off the power of the source engine.

Top 3 get the same rewards as always.

After the Back-To-Basics contest, I'd love to see a contest that's a bit more esoteric.

The goal of the contest would be to make a map of an unusual gamemode, such as Robot Destruction, Territory Control, Special Delivery, Mannpower, or PASS Time. Maybe even Training Mode if you wanted to get really off-the-wall.

The duration would have to be longer than most contests, since the reason many of these gamemodes are rare is because the logic is complex.

no its cause theyre bad

Maybe so, but there's a chance that people only think a gamemode is bad because the few/only maps it has are garbage.

How about a contest for new gamemodes? or a contest for unpopular gamemodes? and we can release a series of guides in case someone wants to learn how to make a map for one of the unpopular gamemodes, that way we can have new gamemodes that we can use for future contests.
