Wasnt submitted to any april fool's days, but I tested the waters for an april fools map last 72 hour, that should be fair game for me to expand upon right?

Yeah should be fine.

Question: I really want to participate, but I'm very new to the mapping scene. Is it okay if I have the TF2 map servers test the map I plan on submitting for layout purposes only (as in, without the gimmicks)? And then submit it to the contest once I have the layout in order and the gimmick implemented?

I don't see any reason that wouldn't be allowed. I think it would be unresonable to not allow testing of April fools maps even with their gimics, how else are you supposed to know if your entity abomination works properly.

For the 2017 April Fools contest, I made a map called koth_skyfall and tried putting it into an IMP they day before the gameday to get it tested. They skipped it, saying that IMPs are for normal maps.

In a way, this is sorta up to the host to decide whether or not to test a map, and there is no way to avoid players RTV'ing a map

people are joining the tf2maps servers to test maps, regardless of whether they're a serious map or not, they're still a map that should get tested. I don't know if there is anything we can do to avoid the maps from getting rtv'd because 'its not a real map', but having gotten feedback that amounts to 'what is this shit' when trying to get joke map and its entity work tested in a server, its a huge loss of motivation.

Sadly I see no real way to change a random players mentality about this, they're joining an imp expecting one thing and the joke maps must go against those expectations, leading to unfair and heavily biased feedback or players sitting in spectate because of how much they despise the idea of the joke map. My only hope is that if I ever try to get an idea or things tested with a joke map is that the host doesn't decide to skip it, and that the players still enjoy themselves enough to not instantly RTV

Well now. I think I've got an idea for an interesting map. Now to check and see if it's been done before...

Well, if there isn't a gimmick, then it would technically be a "normal map", right? I'm just wanting to test for layout, the lay of the map I don't think will affect how the actual gameplay turns out too much.

Perhaps some kind of short early joke map specific IMP for those looking to test their logic? Could avoid problems with unnecessarily negative feedback as people would know what they're getting into.

I'm just gonna make a ctf that is just 2 cardboard forts, and everytime the flag is captured, some random events will happen

If you want to get your joke map seriously played in an imp, the best way is to do any or all of the following:

1) Directly inform the host that you need to test your map, and give a reason. Ideally, choose a host who is willing to host a joke-map in the first place.
2) Put the jokemap second or last in the queue.
3) Be flexible. Beggars can't be choosers.

1. Why would you get banned for this?
2. If you think you get banned for something, maybe think twice before posting?

Looks like I'll be bringing a map I stopped development on a little while ago back from the dead... Hehe.
