because tf2

TF2 is silly, not stupid. TF2 will write "Top Secret" on a door to a room with a window, not put a cow in a foundry. That borders on randomized detailing rather than detailing for a purpose.

EArkham, whether or not you make that sign, I don't think that kind of detailing will fit.

I wanted to make it very square and clean to contrast with the rest of the map, which will have lots of wood and angles.

I've just cutting some corners at 45* angles will help break it up and seem more natural while keeping with the clean and square look.

Cramming in more out-of-bounds detailing:

I'm running out of spots to safely detail, so either I'm going to have to say screw it and start detailing the rest, or be a lot more aggressive with getting more testing done.

That light blue metal building is to thin IMO.
Otherwise, it looks great!

I support Yyler in this. The cow cutout in 2fort is brilliant, because it fits the facade theme of that map.
Coupled with the sign you described it could be pretty funny, but I think that would work best placed in a more unnoticeable place. Like, instead of being in the inaccessible area right outside an outdoor battle zone, it could be outside a window in an indoors corridor.

@ Fredrik, Keir -- Yeah, that's skybox. I either need to extend it a little or match it in the skybox. Interestingly enough, I noticed cp_foundry doesn't have an extensive skybox... all that out of bounds stuff is right there in the main map and is surprisingly detailed in some cases for areas so hard to see clearly.

@The2012CowDebate - I wasn't expecting the cow to be such a big issue that requires sides. :D

After sleeping on it, though, I realized I need banana crates. So I'll probably replace the cow with those. And yes, bananas do make sense in the context of the theme & map.

COW BREAKS IMMERSION 0/10 WOULD NEVER PLAY THIS MAP

but yeah that seems like something best hidden out a window, as an easter egg.

I'm on the cow is a bad choice side. There aren't any animals kept in that kind of industrial steelyard place, so the cow cutout is out of place.

Otherwise the detailing is very nice, do continue.

Posting a few pictures before I go to bed. It's been a looooong night. Montane will be in beta shortly.
Also: WIP, a 3d skybox.

I really want to be able to do combat up on top of those buildings - looks like a lot of fun :wow:

So i refjordged the middle of heatwaves a bit...

Want to work on it a bit more as there are still sightlines everywhere and i know how to fix them while breaking up the geometry at the same time. but thats fjord later.

It also appears to be projecting backwards which is totally wrong since that's a highly directional light source. It definitely wouldn't cast on the ceiling either.

That train... is just... very oddly placed. The rest is quite nice.

"It wasn't a bad job, loading cargo from the warehouse to the railway. That changed when Gate Five was put in. There were objections immediately upon even the suggestion, due to the close proximity and frequent use of the #7 train line, but the foreman would have none of it. All protests were met with his hurriedly muttering something about 'the train god demands blood and blood he shall have.' And ever since, when the #7 rolled in at breakneck speeds, came not the usual satisifaction of a job well done and a cargo car fair loaded to destinations far away, but the stark and closely held terror of having to cross the dreaded tracks at Gate Five."
