Just a simple question that I'd like an answer to.

it's a TF2 swear word for when hammer crashes just after you've done a big map edit and haven't had a chance to save it yet.

I've never gotten crashes *before* saving maps but After. I mean, you save your map, and it may crash on like the first, second or third entity you double-click on.

BSP stands for Binary Space Partition.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quake_engine

It goes back all the way to the quake engine. Valve used the Quake Engine's source code to develop the GoldSource engine (albeit, a heavily modified version of the Quake Engine.) and Gold Source served as the basis for the source engine which is the Engine that HL2,Portal,CSS,CS:GO,Dota and TF2 uses.

Why did you bump this from 9 days ago? Especially since someone else already answered the question.

BSP goes further back than that. Doom (the original) doesn't have .bsp files, but it does have node builders that use binary space partitioning.

BSP is short for Binary Space Partitioning; its use goes back to the 50s as a scene graph for computer flight simulators used for military and commercial training. Back then, there was no VBSP (valve BSP, bsp standing for Binary Space Partition) to create the graph for you.

Call_Me_Quake added new information, saying that BSP went back to Quake, then I added that it was around before that, having been used in Doom, and than vanSulli added that it went all the way back to the 50s. I like learning new things. The point is that not all of the new posts were useless.
