You on OS X by any chance? Because TF2 has had that memory leak ever since Gun Mettle, and I think a developer should not get a way with such a broken game but because it's Valve they apparently can.
Are there memory leaks, or just bad memory management? Because the last time I probed tf2 for preformance was like 2 years ago, and the memory management was awful and slowed the game down a bit, but no memory leaks. They seemed to release everything from the heap when it's not needed, I'm not sure about the stack though, but that should be at least semi automatic.

We also need to be able to join a game in-progress. Whenever we want. Leave without penalty. Pick a map we like at a location nearby. All the things quickplay already did.

Don't forget being able to play for more than two rounds.

As community servers are now, the majority AREN'T the maps you want to play, or nearby for some. That doesn't include the over-the-top plugins and other crap like instant respawn or mods like "x10" or "Randomizer".

Luckily we will be getting some new vanilla based servers, maybe even with custom maps thrown in.

You've got to be kidding me. Name me 15 no-bullshit stock rotation servers that are nearly full at all times at under 40 ping. That's what quickplay offered.

you mean that's what quickplay killed in the first place

That's the thing. Quickplay replaced the community servers, and now that we don't have Quickplay anymore, we don't have any good servers at all.

Quickplay is like a drug dependency =P

At least it existed! You want them to kill both things now??
it makes no doubt to me that the community will fill the gap in time, as they've done in the past, don't you worry. the end result will ultimately be more power in the hands of the community to play the way they want to play. The way I see it, they made the streamlined/bullshit free option more streamlined and with even less bullshit. For everything else, community servers will be more viable than ever and in theory, you'll likely get more servers that are closer to you than valve's datacenters

Looks like they filled the gap again.

Honestly the game is a mess right now, The game it self and the community is just a mess.
Other games which have had recent competitive play seem to have implemented it fine, and games in the past have as well.

But TF2 it just doesnt seem to work. I gonna be honest here, if TF2 competitive was gonna be a thing, it would of been a thing by now, that game has been out for 9 years now and the competitive side hasn't really changed.
Adding a Competitive match making option wont change this. Its worth a good try but people have been pushing it for years and its gone no where. Compare TF2 to other popular e-sports games and you realise how little TF2 comp scene is. Valve is only trying now to push high level comp play after 9 years, its the one audience they have ignored for the longest time, and now they are doing a back peddle to catch up.

I'm fine with the push for Higher level comp play, but I think its well past its sell by date honestly. This update probably wont change much, I doubt it will introduce new players, it will just make the current players slightly more happy.

tf2 competitive has been a thing for 9 years, it was just supported by third parties, like all competitive scenes were until recently

even CS:S competitive was third-party only

I'm not sure if the intention of this update is to introduce players to the TF2 comp scene; rather, I think TF Team simply wants to introduce the option of higher-level play to a wider audience.

I've never really seen myself as a 'competitive-grade' TF2 player. Fine enough, sure, and I've had a ton of fun, but I didn't see myself moving past pubs. Yet, whenever I would watch comp TF2 livestreams, I would get the itch to dive into what seemed like a completely different TF2. This TF2 is strategy focused, meta focused, and full of unknown gameplay depth.

Adding a dedicated Competitive option to TF2 has allowed me to get my feet wet and stretch those strategy muscles without the commitments that go along with league play. Suddenly, I'm gauging how our team should advance based on player deaths and placement throughout the map, stuff I would only get small tastes of in pubs. I'm able to maintain a friendly and constructive dialogue between team members, rarely with any toxicity involved: finally we all have the same goal in mind.

I started to really pick up on the Competitive feeling when pushing last on cp_sunshine. Hopping between 2nd and the balcony as Scout, I watched my team trickle into the opposing team's base from all sides. The round ended in a successful push from multiple sides.

Perhaps all of this is anecdotal. Perhaps any shred of friendly, exciting Competitive play will fade away once people get settled into new grooves. But at the very least, I think Matchmaking has all the components necessary to give previous pub-only types a satisfying look into higher-level TF2. It might not give new life to previously-established leagues, but it'll at least add some well-needed match diversity to the game.

But that wouldn't be vanilla anymore. You'd have to change server always when server runs custom map you don't want to play

i think its vanilla as far as it doesn't have shitty ads and crazy plugins like most community servers do
