Welcome to Microcontest 2!

Time commitment: Around 5 hours
Difficulty: 5/5

We need at least two players, or this won't work, please respond to this thread if you plan on participating.

This is a two-phase microcontest that involves each contestant making two stages for a payload map: one first stage, and one final stage. Every player's .vmf will be swapped between phases, meaning you'll be finishing a different map than the one you started.

All spawn and payload logic has been prepped for you. Download the starter attached to this post to get started!

PHASE 1:

Player 1, please build the first stage of a 2-stage Payload map.

You will have 2 hours.

The spawn room you build for Red team must also double as the spawn room for Blu team during the second stage.

There's a big arrow pointing at a filter; use that for any spawn doors so they properly change team between rounds.

Do not build past the setup gates for Stage 2. Look at Goldrush or Hoodoo if you're confused on what you shoud be doing with spawns.

Once you are finished, submit your .vmf to 14bit and wait for phase 1 to finish. You will then be given a random other player's .vmf to create a second stage for, using their existing spawn room.

PHASE 2:

Player 2, please build the final stage of a 2-stage Payload map, using the first stage and spawn you are given.

You will have 2 hours.

Blue team's spawn room must be Red team's spawn room from Stage 1. You can modify the spawn as needed, but try to keep changes to a minimum if possible.

Don't worry about compiling before the deadline, just don't make any gameplay changes after time is up.

NOTES:

Name your Phase 1 .vmf pl_<yourname>_mc2_a1

Name you Phase 2 .vmf pl_<player1><player2>_mc2_a1

I can fudge the numbers somewhat and fill in a gap if needed, but try only to participate if you can work on both phases.

Try to only use stock assets if possible, custom content might break things.

This is highly experimental and might fall apart, but at least we'll have fun along the way.

Discord seems to have died right at the deadline. You can continue work to seal the map, add lighting, and fix logic, and compile, but do not make any more layout changes. I'll collect them once Discord recovers.

Hello contestants! Please create a download for the map you completed (the one you did a second stage for) and link it here. I'll be setting up public voting tomorrow, which may or may not include another test.
Code:
<Download Link>
Stage one by: <Name>
Stage two by: <Name>

I keep missing these!

I know the entire point of these microcontests is to throw them up quickly and finish them even faster, but if we had around a day of heads-up instead of a couple hours a lot more people would hop on these bad boys, myself included.

Good news! The microcontests are here to stay, and I’m in the process of setting up infrastructure to make them a more permanent fixture. We’ve already got a role set up in the Discord that you can opt into for pings when microcontests are announced, when they start, and when time ends. There will be a dedicated channel for them in the discord soon as well.

Every month for the rest of 2020 I will be hosting one; from here on out they will all be on weekends and communicated well in advance. As a staff team we are currently planning our next set of events, including the next major contests, detailing contest, and the April Fools gameday, so I don’t have a date for April’s microcontest yet.

The challenges themselves will be kept secret until the day of the microcontest, but I’m hoping to communicate the challenge level and time commitment at least a week out for future microcontests.

Thanks for playing everyone! This was a great learning experience to figure out what people want from these, and how much I can realistically push contestants. Based on all the feedback, the next one will be more open-ended and significantly easier. There is no set date yet, but plan for a weekend in April.
