its intimidating to read how so many here have a first map back in the days of HL1 or quake or TFC.

makes me wonder how long its going to take for me to put out a decent one myself.

i was flying throgh developing my first map, but now im struggling a bit due to my ambitious capture system. im dumbing it down to a simple attack/defend for now so that i can just continue learnign the other aspects of mapping. then will come back and release the true version i want to release.

My first map was in Timesplitters 3 :p It was bad, but looking back, so was its mapmaker. Doesnt make me forget the days 2 tower crossings and death pits with turrets and no lights. Those were the days.

What was your first non-test map that you played with your friends or something?

Do you mean never publicly tested? or released?

mine was much the same as the op for CS 1.6 basically a room with 2 walls creating an S bend and a glass wall in the middle that you had to break before teh teams could fight or you could gren spam over the top, also one of each team spawned on teh other teams side every round. much fun was had with friends at lans.

too bad making a real map isnt that easy... :)

Ah, thinking while reading this thread made me remember some good old days. My very first map attempts were with Age Of Empires 2 when it was released (10 years ago). I can remember how hard it was to program something in it without internet and tutorials. But some crappy maps were released and played with my friends.

No, wait a second... My very VERY first maps were made to game named Mine Bombers (maybe familiar to some players from Finland). And that game was released in -95 so my mapping history goes way back :D . Those maps had to be played on same computer so sometimes there were 4 of us playing my map around one keyboard (oh my those 486's beebs when too many buttons were pressed at the same time).

But my first FPS map was done only couple of years ago for cs 1.6. and I didn't even released it even amongst my friends.
