I've met Youme in person a while ago, and since I cosplay I've met quite a lot of people through 4chan and the like at conventions.
You gotta be pretty cautious about who you meet, but most of the time the people I meet are all really awesome and fantastic. Though I would be concerned if you just met someone online and wanted to meet, usually I get to know people a good couple of months before I meet them in person.
Met a ton of people from my usual TF2 server at PAX East the past two years.
The leader of the clan I've been in since I was 13 (I'm 25) moved across the country and is living about a half hour away from me now. He's over right now, even.
Yes, I went to a theme park with a guy I met on TF2 - he lives in Poland but he was in England on holiday. I'm all for it, but, it'd have to be someone I talk more than play games with. On the flip side, I met someone in real life who happens to play on the same minecraft server as me! On a Computer Science course I suppose the odds are a little higher.
Back when uhh... wow, it was ten years ago now, I guess, I went to a LAN party for a TFC server/clan I played on because it was only an hour or two drive away. But it was complete "strangers" I only knew through the internet, not even photos or anything. It wasn't too big, something like 10-12 people. Went the only two years they had it before the community kinda drifted apart.
