Trying to use the vertex tool that way shown in the picture doesn't work for me (it simply goes to the upper dot).

This strangely worked for me before.

Unless you have 'Snap to Grid' enabled, it's impossible to align it to the smaller dot, unless it's aligned on a smaller grid size (which looks doubtful)

You can always move the smaller dot onto the gridline though, then it'll align perfectly.

When I did it previously I did not have to disable "snap on grid"

look, i don't think you understand...

the vertex tool aligns different vertex (corners) of the block your working with to a point on the grid... not to a point on another block...

the reason this probably worked in the past with you is that there is a possibility that the two points were exactly the same, or in other words, the point on the grid, and point on the block you were aligning the other block to were exactly the same...

there are two ways to fix this:
1: align the smaller point onto the current grid by manipulating that point
2: resize the grid... this is probably the easier way short term, but in a long term project, it may be better to do the first option... but you would do this by pressing either "[" for smaller, or "]" for bigger grid size... the smallest you can go is 1huX1hu, and the largest you can go is, i think 512huX512hu... but dont quote me on that...

if anything didn't make sense, please tell me and i will reiterate...

My english isn't really that good.

so, you have three points, right?

you have the point you are messing with using the vertex tool, lets call this point A
you have the point that you are trying to bring point a to, lets call this point B
and you have a point on the grid, lets call this point C, there are infinite point C's, but there is space between them

now, if two points are in exactly the same spot, then we will say that they are exactly the same...

so the reason that this may have worked for you in the past is that point B and a point C are in the exact same position, or exactly the same...

so because of the fact that point A must be in the exact same place as a point C, if point C and point B are not in the exact same place, then you cant drag point A to point B...

do you understand?

You want it to align to the upper smaller dot?
If so, it's off-grid, so you won't be able to.

Or are you trying to move the red dot into the upper big white dot?
You actually can if that small dot is a vertex itself. Just need to move the brush using vertex tool so that vertex is on grid. This is actually a great trick for aligning vertices.
