I decided to start this thread specifically for the audiophile in all of us. Just tell us want to listen to (make sure to do it legally - I do not condone torrenting or otherwise), and we'll (hopefully) heed your advice. I'll start (please use this model):

    "Solsbury Hill"
    Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel

Thankyouthankyouthankyou! My first concert was actually Roger Waters: The Wall. I would also recommend listening to Shine On You Crazy Diamond (if you can sit through 26:01 of song). These are the kinds of songs you can listen to with your eyes closed, and just, I don't know, feeel the music.
    Dose sum phat beets!
Honestly, this song holds some personal memories for me, and I'm smiling thinking about them.

M8, I have every single album of those guys. I play those guys whenever I'm mapping, animating in SFM or doing whatever else that doesn't require YouTube.

As for the "These are the kinds of songs you can listen to with your eyes closed, and just, I don't know, feeel the music" part: Echoes delivers perfectly. You'd probably enjoy it even more when you're high but I can't give my experience on that experience.

Oh, those late-80's / early 90's album covers...

In all seriousness, this is great. Fast, neat chorus with some memorable layering. Neato!

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm infatuated with They Might Be Giants. Right now I'm obsessed with Doctor Worm.

EDIT: In fact I'm going to link my favourite albums: Lincoln, John Henry and Mink Car. (Doctor Worm isn't on any of them but oh well.)

Add the whole Dark Side of the Moon in there too. And Wish you were here. And Animals. And The Wall.

I've just got to say, you have made one of the biggest influences to my artistic taste in my LIFE. Some new-favorites are the aforementioned Dr. Worm as well as Birdhouse in Your Soul. If I could double-thanks, I would.

Here's a link to They Might Be Giant's website, for all your album-buying needs.

The Wall was my first concert! It holds many-a-memory that are near and dear to my heart.

bonobo - my favorite artist right now. nice moody stuff. he's great at working with lots of interesting samples. his newer stuff just keeps getting better in my opinion as well. sapphire, jets, cirrus, antenna, and emkay off his album "the north borders" are all incredible. his latest ep "flashlight" is great too, flashlight and return to air from that album are sweet.

phaeleh - this guy also makes some awesome ambient, moody music, somewhat egyptian-themed stuff. you'll have to listen to see what i mean. i'm not really liking his newer stuff, but i adore his album "fallen light", especially plateau, losing you, sundown, lament, and afterglow. found him from this crack clan video, hooked me!

also, kind of unrelated, but if you're into music and have some capable headphones or just want a little boost in fidelity, ditch itunes and download foobar2000. it's a great alternative, adds full control over the ui, downloadable components to do extra things like find lyrics, manage your ipod etc. but the best is that it supports lossless and high bitrate music which itunes cannot. if you do try it out, i'd recommend watching the tek syndicate's video series on setting up and customizing things.

here's my foobar ui if you're interested:

People who know me know I love some Aesop Rock. He is probably the only rap artist I can truly indulge in, he has a certain flavour and character to his music and lyrics that keeps me coming back. He also uses one of widest vocabularies in hip hop ever, which allows him to tell a more fully formed story than most can in the same ammount of bars. Favorite tracks include Coffee, Daylight (and its parent track, nightlight, which are two different takes on life from two different people) and anything on Skelethon.

He's great and got popular pretty late. You should check out the whole Ninja Tunes Label if you like his stuff.

I don't listen to it so much anymore, moved on to Warp.

A few years ago The Gaslamp Killer and Gonjasufi rocked my world like rarely something before or afterwards.

Some pure electronic stuff is also enjoyable. Mount Kimbie, Bad Bad Not Good, or Pantha du Prince to name some.

Support for thinking - especially creative - only Jazz/Blues doesn't disturb me.
Take The Cinematic Orchestra (though more classic), J.B.Lenoir, Gonzales' Solo Piano Album,
Django Reinhardt, Chet Baker, Charlie Parker, Bert Kaempfert or Matthew Shipp as examples.

Lately I even heard some HipHop again. This isn't very popular in the gaming world, but I name it anyways:
Antipop Consortium, Shabazz Palaces, or some German ;) Retrogott & Hulk Hodn.

Some easy listening would be Erlend Oye, Brad sucks, Erik Sumo...

Instrumental Post Rock is cool too. Can't deny Maserati's or Grails quality.

And there leads no way past Tom Waits. Fits every season of the year.

I better stop now. Just hit me up if you look for more of anything..
