I may have differed a bit from the arctic theme too much, but here's where my idea has gotten so far:

What's with all the green in those trees? It's winter. There are no leaves on trees.

They're coniferous trees.

You know, the type of trees that don't have leaves and stay green all year.

They'd have a little bit of snow on them, now that I think of it. Especially during the winter.
Either way the color will be dimmed down in the final version to not pop out so much...

Map #2 Definitely a lot more interesting geography wise, the blend of snow and forest is just beautiful If I made an arctic map i'd love to take the player through both these landscapes especially in a payload environment. There's also a ton more particle stuff which I will make webm's for.

So, I don't feel this works well in the arctic setting. But I have other ideas.
I'm gonna keep working on this anyway 'cause this is really cool!

I sincerely hope you mean Normal Maps. Even though Source supports it there is absolutely no reason to go with the butt ugly bump maps. Normals do a much better job since they actually calculate light warping around edges, whereas bump maps just make the texture have a bit of depth.
