Oh, I didn't realize it was just showcasing maps. I saw some art, thought maybe it wasn't related to mapping. Maps aside, I like the virtual art gallery.

giant Radio satellite dish ala james bond, hydro, etc. that is located somewhere in south america. I forgot the name of the map but it's been around for a while, since the koth competition iirc. Deathpits ahoy!

Create some ferns and you are ok to make a good map

The leaves remind me more of ferns than of trees, mostly because they're solid green I think; this is especially visible in the second linked picture.

yeah, looks like $alphatest, the trunks also seem like straight spikes without any deformations:

while pine trees are generally very straight, they have some changes in growth direction. what you have is fine for a low lod replacement.

also, note how the ground is covered with dead pine leaves, not so noticeable in the picture above, but this depicts what i mean:
