Where do you put your map files? Do you make folder on desktop or disc with name like "tf2 maps"? Or is there a specific place to place your map files in game files?

You can store your VMF files anywhere you want, Hammer does not care. I store mine in Onedrive so that they're backed up online if I lose my PC. The BSP file must go in a specific location in /tf/maps for TF2 to be able to load it, but Hammer takes care of automatically copying it for you when you compile the map, so you don't need to worry there.

I think Valve uses tf/mapsrc, which lets you use one obscure in-game console command to place physics props in your .vmf files
Pretty sure that command works just as well if you setup hammer's default folder to point at whatever .vmf you're using it for though...

Personally I have a mods/tf2/mapsrc folder on a separate hard drive with all my modpacks & sprays
Inside that I've got folders for each map, and 2 folders for sketches (detail & objectives)
Also I have a few other general folders, once for contests, one for decompiled official maps (reference)

Hammer is also setup to save it's autosaves in this folder for me, instead of the default C:/HammerAutosaves

The folders dated Jan21st are from when I moved the folder to my new PC

I store all of my vmfs, regardless of game, under C:\Source. I keep pretty much all of my project files (Source, Unity, music projects, etc.) close to C:\ so they're easy to find and therefore easy to backup.
