What's the point of having a cool gun if everyone else has one too? You know who has guns that are all alike? The army. And the army isn't fun at all. They barely trade and paint their weapons, they hardly ever give each other presents when one of them does a really good job, and their weapons don't even have kill-counters or sparkle effects. It's almost a job.

Introducing the Gun Mettle Campaign, new to TF2 and releasing tomorrow, which succeeds in every area where the army fails: Rare guns! Mystery boxes! Skill-based prizes! Buying a $5.99 Campaign Pass lets you test your TF mettle against a series of weekly challenges, and gives you the chance to earn one-of-a-kind weapons to keep or trade with your friends. A portion of the sales from Campaign Passes will go towards our hardworking TF2 community mapmakers. Find out more about the new campaign here, and don't forget to read the comic!

Now, say you're the sort of person who's thinking, "You know what's more exciting to me than the Gun Mettle Campaign? Having six dollars." Don't worry, frugal guy, we've got you covered too! A new Valve map! Three new community maps! Taunts! A new way to equip new weapons in-game for free! Loads of class and weapon changes! Check out the details here. You guys, this is a big update. And it lands tomorrow, so check back.

Something I wonder though,
what happens to the maps that got swept under the radar on like the second day of the workshop - what happens to maps that are in early development first on the workshop and aren't rated highly until theyre done - would those ever logistically (popularity in workshop) get in game?

It'll probably be over by the time they're looking for the next maps, by which time the workshop will have equalised a lot and the more popular maps will be easier for them to find.

That said, there's always ways to increase 'popularity', coordinated releases on different sites: reddit, youtube videos, facepunch, etc.

I wish Valve would fix bugs instead of removing half the weapons and replacing them with new ones under the same names. And I can guarantee you the game will be so full of new bugs because of all the unnecessary changes.

Many maps have been uploaded like 2 weeks later and still made it to the high front page of the workshop. It's easily possible.

I'm talking specifically maps that got swept under the radar "the second day of the workshop", "early development first on the workshop and aren't rated highly until theyre done". For those maps it doesn't seem 'easily' possible since they'd have to come back from under the mass of other maps - or will the authors have to resubmit them?

those maps will just die, the only viable strategy is to ride the "top 3 most popular weekly" wave until you make it to the top. if you don't make it in the top 3 weekly, it's as if you map doesn't exist because that's the only place where the views really kick in from what I can tell.

but it's still easy to make it, occult is in the top 10 most popular all time even if it was uploaded just a week ago

The FAQ mentions they plan on doing more of these Campaign Updates in the future and include more community maps this way:

Q: You mentioned something about mapmakers getting a portion of profits. I'm a mapmaker! How do I participate?
A: A portion of profits from the sale of Campaign Passes will go to the creators of the maps featured in the campaign. If you would like your map to be considered for future campaigns, submit them to the Maps Workshop.

I'm guessing if this proves to be successful it's going to be Valve's new method of paying map makers to make the maps official.

Welcome to the world of the workshop.

This is something the modelers know, the DoTA guys know and the CSGO guys know. Marketing is now just as important as making a good looking product. The workshop is not TF2Maps.net's workshop, it doesn't get bumped to the top when someone mentions it. Creating proper promo material, submitting at just the right time and know good marketing skills in general, will help you get much more popularity than just posting it with a bunch of screenshots.

No, the snowplow team knew about it for ~ a month. I was the one who got the first email though, and that was the monday after the workshop started.

Valve is doing what they do best.
Taking ideas that worked amazingly for one game a put it into another.
This Update is almost 1 on 1 the same as a CSGO update, (New skins, challanges, maps)
The possible idea of trimonthly community map rotations is a good idea (look at csgo) It keeps tf2 for people who don't go out there way to find custom maps a reason to play (aka 80% of tf2 players). This is good for us as mappers and its more of a reason to make and FINISH maps, if we know that in 3ish months the map could be in the game.
The weapon skins is a nice touch to add to the growing tf2 economy, I just like pretty looking things.
