So about your no collaborations rule: I have a good friend who wants to watch me on twitch as I make this map, and I'll be skyping with him. He doesn't know shit about mapping but I'm sure he'll just inevitably help out in terms of ideas or testing. Is that counted as collaboration?! Therefore will I be disqualified? Or am I really expected to be cut off from the world for the next 72hrs...

I'm like 100% sure that that wouldn't count as collaboration. Collaboration typically means two people working on the map, either like both working on the vmf in some for or working on assets specifically for the map in a large scale while the other makes the map. Often times people will post screenshots or get people to look at the stream and ask for some feedback on how it looks at the moment, at least I think I remembered that from the previous contests.

EDIT:

Small Question, I'm able to do commentary, right?

If you're streaming mapping, you should seriously be doing commentary. Mapping for the most part is insanely boring to watch without some sort of insight to it. If you don't know mapping then it isn't exactly clear what you're doing and why. Interaction and commentary should be expected from anyone who's mapping for this contest.

This is correct.

If I wanted to make a custom sound, do I need to make that within the 72 hour time frame, or can I start working on sounds now to import into the map?

I created one during the last contest. They can turn out pretty funny.

Thanks Crash, that was really informative about what to expect for this weekend. I'm working Monday so I'll be working on a shorter time limit, but how long did your final compile take if you happen to remember?

I put weeks of preparation into this contest, only to have the theme be an alien attack. I feel like a total dick for saying this, but aliens was the last thing that TF2 needed.

So I figure: "What the hell, I'll just do the next contest." And then its revealed to have the same theme?!? No thanks. I had layouts sketched, tons of ideas in my head. Plans were cancelled. I am going to be missing out on a lot this weekend, and its all for nothing. Why aliens? All you can do with the theme is put some dumb ship in the skybox and blow it up at the end of a mission. There isn't much one can interpret from this theme. It isn't a broad enough topic. Most maps are just going to be the same damn thing.

This contest was the first thing to motivate me in months. This whole thing is just a huge wreck. I'm sorry, I will not be participating in this or the next contest. I've been meaning to say this since Wednesday I've been trying to do it in a way that doesn't make me sound like a prick, but honestly this is how I feel about the topic. I am pissed.

If you had layouts sketched and all you have to do is stick a spaceship in the skybox, why not do that? I understand where you're getting, but why not enter the contest just for the fun of it regardless of the theme? That's what I'm doing at least.

For the past few 72 hour contests, they've acted kinda like gateways to the next contest. You had the one that had the koth contest right before it (Lots of people made koth for that 72 hour contest that they tried to put into STAR_'s koth contest!), then we did themes with the next one (which everyone hated), but 2 skillsets was announced then I think and some people did early versions of their maps for them. This one is just a bit more direct. And I don't see anything necessarily wrong with that, though it does kinda stifle the 72hr contest a little? But I mean, it really won't do too much.

(Also yeah, the 72hr contest theme really doesn't prohibit you from just sticking a spaceship in your map somewhere and claiming oh hey thats the alien theme. Blue is pushing a cart into red's base and oh look there's an alien in the sky but lets ignore him)

Easy solution - Red is being mind controlled by the aliens in their ship floating over the map and blue is either pushing the bomb to a rocket to send into the ship, or capturing points to activate the launch of and already prepared rocket.

Good luck everyone! Map hard!

You can sleep when you're deeeaaad!

I remember messing it up the first time and having to restart it, probably took me 45 minutes to an hour total to get it out the door when I was done mapping. So probably 15 minutes compiles or so with all the bells and whistles in VBCT.

I had to work Monday this past contest too, Friday when it started, as well. It was fun.
