Here are some questions answered from a guy that played the game, after going back with two of the devs from Quakecon. Take it as a pinch of salt though (though the images look legit enough):

To sum up what he said in the thread:
  • Ironsights are ONLY on the revolver, and replace it's zoom feature.
  • The Metal Gear voice is the only one in the game.
  • The brightness in the video isn't the default value, it was much lower.
  • Release date is before Christmas! It's only in bug testing right now.
  • There are a few changes to the original, some can be changed.
  • Graphics-wise, it looks better than most AAA titles released on the market.
  • It feels much more like a game rather than a mod, which is a great thing.
  • Music was also too loud in the gameplay video and is not the default setting.
  • No new weapons have been added, just the standard from the original game.
  • Xen looks better than before. (!!!!!!)
  • There is no Co-op, of course. No multiplayer either.
  • Gman sightings are still the same.
  • Level designs are somewhat changed a lot for the better.
  • More puzzles have been added.
  • Estimated final filesize is about 8-10GB. That's a lotta content!
  • Achievements are in.

They're deviating too far from the original! Half-Life does not have iron sights, and the rails are supposed to electrocute you if you stand on them :(

EDIT: If I had waited before posting, I would have seen Micnax's post and all my fears would have been put to rest. Except for the rails. I still want to be electrocuted by them.

Maybe a higher difficulty mode will have them activated?

The project has never been a 1:1 remake though they were always walking down the fine line of keeping the original feel whilst improving elements that could be.
I am fine with the rails not causing damage now, because that was so fucking annoying in the original it's a welcome change.

I never even noticed the revolver had a zoom before.

The first half (roughly) of Black Mesa's single-player campaign will be released September 14.

Guess I need to get off my ass and finish Half-Life now.

The first half? After all this time, they announce a release, and it's only half?

So basically they're releasing an incomplete game.

Isn't that dandy.

My understanding is that half the time the mod was essentially suspended.

It's a shame, you would have thought the majority of the mod's bulk would have been level design. Although i can see how Xen would have given the most trouble... but still. It is a sad affair.

Its the game up until Xen, so it is more than half.

It's way more than half. See how xen is chapters 15-18 and Inbound to Lambda Core is 1-15? http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Half-Life_storyline

Due to the nature of xen's totally different environment, it would take up far more than 2/9ths of the development work. During all the previous chapters assets are reusable throughout, so just by fully populating one level, you're partially populating another. For xen though everything has to be made from scratch for xen.
Then on top of that, it's a much harder environment to get right. Because it's such a weird place and what Valve gave us originally was so poor it's open for massive interpretation.
I also expect that xen is the area that has undergone most gameplay changes, I remember having to skip parts of xen because I couldn't do the stupid jumps (that or I'd missed an interaction that opened a new route).
I suspect that they didn't start xen for quite a while after starting, it could well be one of those bits no one wants to touch until someone else has made a start on it, and since I'd estimate xen to be roughly 40% of the level design and asset creation work, I am not surprised that it isn't finished.

I also have faith that it will be finished. If the rest of the game is as good as the gaming media make it out to be, the flood of applications they'll receive after it goes live will be huge. So between their current team and any new team members they bring in, xen will get finished.

Every time I think I should offer my services to Black Mesa they announce that they're almost done, then go back on it so I've never actually offered.

Yea, xen only feels so big because of the amount of times you teleport between dimensions and the amount of time you'll spend lost. The Interloper chapter is a logistical nightmare which i hope feels more linear if and when it gets done.

I imagine there'd have been quite some trouble in developing the xen elevators (the ones like the obsidian towers from the ender), water pools and large, internal jump pads.

And we are live.

Or, rather, dead, since all three of the download mirrors are currently giving errors. Even the torrent, which is just a link to a tracker's entry, so apparently they managed to knock out that entire site just from the pageviews alone.
