Well, what do you do if your computer freezes half, if you click away hammer to surf a bit you never gonna know if your hammer crashed or if its still compiling

Most of the time I watch some tv or draw a bit

i compile my map on my media center over the network :biggthumpup:

I set Windows Media Player to always on top and start watching a tv show before I start compiling. This way you don't have to click away from compile window so you can still see progress as it compiles and watch tv :biggthumpup:.

I use Batch Compiler to run the compile tools which frees up more resources by not having Hammer running, plus I can always see the window update in real time. If I need to do something else I just use the taskmanager to lower the priority on the compile process until my other thing loads, then turn the compile back up.

I usually chat or read webcomics or go use the bathroom or something.

I usually listen to music by going to youtube while designing and get up and walk around, stretch the legs when compiling.

On the current map I'm working on. A full compile takes about three and a half hours to complete.

VBSP: 21 seconds
VVIS: 3 hours, 24 minutes, 26 seconds
VRAD: 7 minutes, 23 seconds

Doing a fast compile take less than a half hour.

wow, that is long. I thought a fast compile would always stay under a few minutes.

Edit: a full compile of photofinish takes about 10 minutes (including hdr)

95%+ of compiles i run are over in 2 minutes so its a good time to continue a steam conversaion or forum browsing or map uploading or whatever really
