So Boylee and I took everyone's advice (except for the too dark sky bit. That is a bit hard to change atm) and here's what it looks like now:

Just an FYI, by increasing the brightness of the sky you increase the margin of brightness you can afford to set in your environment light (the environment light will tend to be a few figures more than the 2dsky ambient levels); the benefit of which is not having to plaster your map in lights which will be necassery with the contrast of such low ambient light and direct light sources.

The cliffs already look too bright since they're facing away from the sun, but lit as if they were facing towards it.

Also the falloff of light on the horizon shouldn't be so local, the sun casts light on half the globe at any one time, it's not a torch, you should have light appear across the horizon more as the atmosphere refracts it.

now that sunset light affects cliffs, its much better. the cliff brightness might even be acceptable in-game - tf2 night settings are rather bright, looking at halloween maps and it should contrast with the brighter level enough for our in-built HDR to kick in :D besides, it looks great and thats all the mortal players need; it is us mappers who notice and take into account every little detail.

I wish I could say I understood all of that, Grazr, but I didn't, unfortunately.

About the only part I can address is the brightness of the hills/cliffs. That's because there is a moon on the other side of the map slightly lighting the landscape as well.

Thanks, and I agree. I actually had Boylee telling me that he thinks the ambient light should be slightly brighter, so I kind of went half way in between. I'm very happy with how this turned out.

Also, we're on Page 404 now. Page cannot be found?

That's neat. So the crane picks the cart up and over?
