These are way too bright to be caves. Both would look infinity times better with heavy use of light_spots and the second one would be so badass with a really dark ceiling.

First attempt, will re-render and see how dark I can get that ceiling. I agree, I really think the size of the mine is more emphasized with a darker ceiling

It's pretty hard to do, even if you use nothing but spotlights.

The best way to make ceilings really gloomy is to use a darker material.. you can avoid packing in a new texture into the bsp if you make your own vmt and use the $color2 value to tint an existing texture.

I don't mean to be a killjoy but I am having problems figuring out the extent of the buildings-within-a-cave. Why do you need a building with a roof when you're already "inside"? I guess you'd get condensation and dripping from above when it rains but it seems a little unrealistic to me.

Well probably to keep rocks from hitting people on the head pr something...Eh, it's TF2. :)P) Valve has done some weirder stuff before with their map layouts.

I have to wonder what the best way of going about making specular maps is. The one on the left has no specular map. the one on the right has one, but with default values.
