Valve Artpass: The Lost Mountain Labs

Back in 2010 there was a contest in which Valve gave the TF2M community a base map to artpass. Since then, most of those maps have been forgotten with the unique styling some of them used.

Some of the maps had cubemap problems or were outright corrupted. I grabbed what I could. Enjoy.

Very nostalgic. I always liked ABS's grassy+redrock, rather minimalist approach. Dr. Spud's vineyard approach was also very refreshing.

And I remember being totally blown away by Fubar's shipwreck at B, at the time.

This artpass contest was my first attempt at the Cambodia theme. My map wasn't listed because I didn't finish it in time; had I known it was fine to submit a partially finished map I wouldn't have dropped out, but I was relatively new to TF2 mapping at the time.

This contest got me really amped up making maps for awhile, and I created a 5 point push map using the theme, then eventually revisited and updated the theme to make the current Antiquity.

Good memories.

Huh, I always thought the tractor in game was the correct one as it's a much better model, at least in my opinion. Kind of weird to find that it wasn't part of the original submission.

I've always loved the Art Pass Contest. It was really what got me into mapping. Although I wasn't very active, I was lurking a lot and keeping an eye on Whark's map, which was using a new Arabian theme.

Interesting Fact. I used Valve Base as the basis for my 2020 April Fools map, e1m1mountainlab

Never underestimate how little motivation you are going to need to go back to a 10-year-old thread and download a blocked-out version of Mountain Lab.

None of the assets are packed into the map, so you will need to put the files into your TF2 stuff. It actually does function as an A/D map by the way; Typical Montain Lab-like gameplay.
