This map, and this map alone crashes TF2. I have no idea why, a4 worked fine.

Seems right, the console spewed out a missing particle file, probably that.

So I got a crash report. I'm going to dig trough it and see what's what. Then I'll contact you @Crash .

So if anybody has any TF2 coding knowledge whatsoever and would be nice enough to look at the crash report to see what's going on, feel free to look at it in this Dropbox folder. It's a .doc file.

If I had to take a guess, you're crashing because of the lightmaps on the sphinx prop.

I believe, the stack trace shows a crash in the material system while it's converting a texture from one format to another. If you follow that down the trace a bit, the source of the texture is CreateLightmapsFromData called as a result of DrawStaticPropArrayFast.

Strange that it's only on OS X though. Everybody else seemed fine, judging by the full servers.

I'm going to send that error report to Valve, alongside an explanation of the error. Maybe they'll fix it some time. TF2 on OS X is a big problem for Valve at the moment, since they also can't seem to get rid of the horrific memory management on the platform that makes TF2 run out of memory instantly when set to anything but medium or low texture quality. All the proposed fixes so far have lead to absolutely 0 improvements, even making the game boot slower than before. On Windows it's booted up in 5 seconds (PCIe SSD for the win). On OS X it takes 25-30 seconds.

Perhaps ironically, this issue only occurs when running on medium or lower texture settings. The OpenGL backend seems especially susceptible. The next TF update should fix this issue, so Crash will have to try harder to crash everything.

Well first let me geek out over the fact that a Valve developer is in the forum and replying to stuff.

Secondly, I'm forced to run on medium settings because A: Valve locked out Ultra on OS X and B: running on High makes the game use absurd amounts of RAM and makes it crash within seconds of loading up a server with people playing on it (so it's probably a good thing Ultra is locked out). Recent attempts by Valve to solve that have sadly resulted in no improvements whatsoever so far.

If you want more specific details on the latter issue, I have about 8 crash reports in a zip all generated by TF2 running out of memory on High texture settings. I emailed those to Eric Smith and John McDonald about 3 weeks ago so they're fairly recent, but if you want them anyway shoot me a pm. I used to run this game on Ultra (my Mac can handle it perfectly fine), then the April 29th, 2015 update broke memory management (patch notes said the material system was updated so that's likely where the root cause of the whole problem is) with Gun Mettle destroying it completely. Since then I run on medium because I have no other choice.
