I believe the issue was actually caused by the UV mapping of the model not giving enough room for proper lightmap shadows (shared UV space)

But sadly the worst offender (the one still shown in the OP's screenshots) was the big black line under the chin of the Sphinx. That one one totally my fault, I had a nodraw brush cutting through RIGHT THERE that I was using for optimization purposes. Silly 72hr speed mapping mistake!

Just how high is the resolution of that lightmap? Because it looks like real-time lighting. I can't imagine what that does to the file size.

On the sphinx? 1024 x 1024, for all 4 parts of it (head, body, left arm, right arm.) The map ends up being about 110mb, which is 26mb after repacking. Repacking is glory.
