I dunno, I haven't got an e-mail yet. All I know is it's all going to be from the Valve store and it will have a shirt.

Yeah but I wanted to let people know that I agree that I shouldn't have won.

Plus if you know I'm here you'll go easy on me... hopefully.

I suspect Valve is trolling.

It's over 9000!
...
Sorry, someone had to say it.

Anyways, I think VALVe have been pretty decent about this. Obviously not everyone can win or be a runner up, I think they probably picked the runners up by the ones that made them laugh as much as by the ones that impressed them.

Case in point: Most Convincing Argument for Education.

I lol'd at this, I can understand how it would piss people off after spending a long time on something but these aren't the winners, they're honorable mentions, for many reasons not just quality.

I imagine when you have to sift through 11,000 images (assuming VALVe aren't trolling) you would need to have a good laugh to stay sane. Inevitably the ones that gave you those laughs would stick in your head.

Why are people upset about the silly awards? I rather enjoyed the "Most Convincing Argument for Learning How to Contract by One Pixel in Photoshop" category.

It's simple marketing, folks. There may be 10000 good pictures of a Soldier holding a rocket launcher, sure. Then one of them will be mentioned. The crappy pictures that honestly were made in Paint for the lulz and even managed to make the Valve guys laugh as well will be mentioned, too. Nobody cares about the effort either, it's only the product that counts.

Youme, you even have a Community weapon. I suspect you got money for Hoodoo, too? Are you honestly complaining about Valve not rewarding contribution?

I'm not bitter about not winning. I'm bitter about ALL the people that put in effort and skill to produce a quality piece of art and didn't win over the crap that didn't have any effort, planning or an ounce of talent put in that only took seconds to create.

I didn't expect to win, because my skill isn't high enough.

Now I know next time that my skill isn't low enough either.

Also, as shmitz said, if you didn't take any time to put any effort in to making something you have no place to comment.

Because you don't reward someone that hasn't actually done well....

Hell they're our feelings by the same token ;)

I think Spud's right with this one, it's definitely for shits and giggles, I'm doubtful those entries would have taken the place of any other ones, they just added them in for a more lolsome breakfast.

People who don't have access to super duper graphics programs or have a tablet, and still wanted to enter should get a chance at winning too. Hence the inclusion of some of them.

Or maybe they're just having a laugh.

Yes, no one is denying that. But you're looking at it wrong.
Its not about the medium. Its about the quality of the work. If you can produce a good piece of art in just MS paint, that deserves the same weight as a good piece of art made with five, multi-thousand dollar software suites.

If you make something shit with ms paint, that should be given the same weight as something shit made in those top software suites.

If you make something shit, it should not be awarded higher status than something that is actually good, no matter what the medium.

Valve are making a joke at the expense of the crap entries.

for instance:

Most Convincing Argument for Learning How to Contract by One Pixel in Photoshop.

Is a joke at the inability or lack of skill using photoshop (and i actually laughed pretty hard at it). They're not being rewarded for being good. But i imagine for the sakes of making a joke at their expense, here's some free stuff, don't go squandering it on eBay in one go.

Sure, tell me i don't understand because i didn't enter, but plenty of people have entered into competitions to have other people of blatently lower skill and talent win over them. At least this time around this guys 'won' under you. Consilation prizes. Oh well.

Can't you just be more proud of an amazing piece of art you've created rather than a t-shirt? That's the way I see it, I would feel better by having a lot of random people tell me my art work is really good then to win some t-shirt in a contest.

If you didn't participate... if you didn't put in hours to create something you were proud of, you have no place to comment.
I didn't enter because my Photoshop skills are below 'lacking' level. but like i said, some of you guys, including you, are taking this a little too seriously.

It's Valve's contest, they choose the winner. No need to throw a mini fit about it. they choose the top entries, and choose some comical ones. According to Valve, yours wasn't good enough, or silly/dumb enough to win.

Here is where you can potentially be looking at it wrong also. What if Valve wasn't just looking for amazing entries? What if it was looking for funny entries? Maybe the contest was to look for absolutely ridiculous entries? Nobody knows.

When you're competing for a prize and some of the crap they gave prizes to gets one, and you don't, it's very serious.

If it was just a mention, who cares, but when you compete being led to believe that the top 30ish entries will get cool prizes, to have 2 second ms paint jobs take a prize its a kick in the balls, then another once you're down, then a curb stomp.

Its just disrespectful to all the people who actually tried.

@grazr the funny thing about the few really crap entries is valve's comments about them, not the entry themselves. They're just sad.

I'm coming across as more upset than I actually am because I want you to understand my point rather than shrug it off like most of you have. This isn't how people who have put effort in should be treated.

Valve can reward whoever they want.
It's their contest.
