I think the most important thing I wish I would have been told about from the very start from reading the TF2 blog announcing the contest is that:

"Entries with humor will be rewarded"

No one ever said that. I say this because I didn't focus on humor, in fact humor didn't even cross my mind when I designed my entry. If I had been aware the judgment procedures would be based on humor, I would done my best to make the funniest damn poster I could make. But I didn't. I have a degree in painting...that's my specialty, and so I created a very design oriented composition and I painted it. And it had a very simple message. No humor was ever intended.

So I think the only people are at fault for the reason the chosen runners up ended up this way is because the specifications of the guidelines were just not specific enough.

Well in a game like TF2 you should naturally expect humor to be a huge factor. Not like "hurr I did bad on purpose" humor, but even if you paint like Davinci, while they'd definitely take that into consideration, they'd focus more on the themes that TF2 is based on, such as style and humor.

Also, not all the ones that one were full of humour. Some of them were just pure awesome:

Awesome
Awesome2
Awesome3

There's more too.

To me, in order to win, you needed to make something visually impressive.

Or make something that sucks, really really sucks, so we can all laugh at you.

I'm going to get bashed all week now... I feel more like I lost than won. And it's not like I didn't try, but I did it for fun and didn't really expect to win anything, but now I "won" in the sense of being a shitty gimmick.

That and it was done in GIMP so I don't even feel like I'm qualified for the gimmick I won in.

Bah.

Well it seems moot. If I spent 50 years doing a drawing or 50 seconds, it would still look rubbish.

The points being :

- how good something looks has very little to do with the amount of time spent on it (Megan fox's dad probably did 5 minutes of huffing and puffing and look at the result)

- The competition wasn't to see who had spent the most number of hours making a poster. If it was I would have bought a jar of coffee and won it hands down. Want paying by the hour? McDonalds et al do that.

OTOH, the best drawing in the world wasn't going to win if the idea didn't click with Valve.

Think your opinion about the best map or poster is de facto right (you're probably not alone): Create your own award winning game company, run your own poster competition and you be the judge (and a multi millionaire too, what's not to like?)

Want to win in Valve's competition next time or get your map picked? Ask yourself why Valve pick what they do, whether it's hoodoo or a particular set of posters.

You learn something about what Valve want from seeing what maps they pick, and what competition winners they choose. Then, if getting your map picked, or winning an item you could probably model yourself in half an hour matters, you'll be miles ahead of the game the next time. Because I guarantee the vast majority of those complaining about who won will learn nothing from it at all and will just rationalise it away as Valve being wrong.

I too am a little disappointing with valve's poor choice in winners. Valve's apparently been taken over by radical socialists!

Congrats!

Do you know already what kind of item it is? I suppose either a community weapon or a hat?

The emails so far contain no info on what item it is, I imagine once they've given valve their profile info they'll just have an item appear in their backpack, we're probably just going to have to wait to see what it is. I doubt community weapons, might be another unique hat, maybe something else.

I'm a little disappointed mine didn't get into "Best Attempts at Authentic WWII-Era Propaganda".

I would echo what others have said about the scope of the contest: I think it would've been better for everyone if Valve had been a lot more specific about what they were looking for. Does it go on a T-shirt (which implies certain art restrictions) or not? Original drawing, or is compositing screenshots from the game or model-poser OK? All that stuff.

Yours is too noisy and too colorful to be a copy of WW2 era propaganda.

do you really want to go that sour way in this thread, terr ?
the heavy aliasing, the font not too much fitting,...
and i don't mean it in a harsh way. its ok that you people are kinda upset you didn't get chosen, but let's move on now, contribution stuff is on it's way maybe we all have a better chance this time :)

Not really. Everyone had the best chance ever with this contest, since valve just took whatever they liked regardless of quality. The contributed things will most likely only pass if they are top quality, meaning nobody has a better chance, except maybe you Mr Modeller :p

Terr: what's your point? you slapped some stuff on a screenshot. That's about as far from "authentic" as you can get. You didn't even try to make it look painted/drawn or anything.

Compare what I wrote to the first post in the thread. I think I'm being comparably chipper. :p

Wrong context for "authentic". When it says "Authentic WWII Propaganda" it means submissions similar to propaganda posters which were actually printed and distributed during WWII. By comparison, some very nice submissions people made have the style of WWII posters but don't resemble any which were actually made during that time period.
