Modeling Programs

Hi,

First - thanks to everyone's comments on the map test it helps a lot!

2nd - it was mentioned in game that no one does brush modeling anymore.

Does anyone know of any good modeling programs (free) and where I can download them?

I'd like to get some more custom stuff into my maps

Ok - great have it downloaded ad installed - no for the fun one:

How do I use it? < two part question and a bonus one.

1. How DO I use it < know any good resources to start me off?
2. Scale - how do I determine if I'm scaling everything right to be used in hammer. Can I import a model file from TF2 and make a model next to is make sure I get the right scale, etc?
3. Once the model is made what do I do with any custom textures, etc.

Bonus - Can I make hats with it?

Edit - forget question 1 - I see there are a ton of tutorials on youtube, etc.

Mostly all the modeling programs will be 'hard to use' at the start. You step up, you learn, welcome to starting anything new.

Blender is free, 3DSMax might have a student license, if you have an email for school. If you want to model for free and easily, go with Blender.

I quit learning to model a half a dozen times before I finally stuck with it.

Blender can be finicky as far as getting things to work in Source, but once you figure it out...it's at least consistent.

Reviving this dead thread somewhat, but.... a not-so-simple question with a not-so-simple answer.

Basically I want to know, of all the various 3D modelling programs there are out there, which is the best for making props to use in the Source engine?

For me the single most important factor for picking a program is how quickly I can learn it or use it. I, like most of you, don't have more than a couple hours (if that) in the evening to spend in front of the computer. So I don't want to invest my time and effort into using a feature rich program that ultimately does not meet my needs.

I don't mind buying a program, I just want to know that the program I buy can do all I need to, even though I don't yet know what I need. Of course if there is a free alternative, or another program that is easier to use then feel free to nominate them.

I will add here that I already have Blender installed, I just haven't sat down with any tutorials yet to even attempt learning it. Likewise I have Propper but I do want to make curved things too.
