How about a contest that doesn't suck :p

But really, I want a contest where we make RATS maps with weird themes (like... candy land or inside a computer).

I attempted a spinning map, i used a phys_motor- it was really glitchy and sometimes didn't move, but once i solved that problem, when it did spin, the player wouldn't. You would just glitch in place while it spun.

I started with func_rotating, but the player can block that by standing on it, and when they get off of it, it spins really fast to "catch up."

I did however get it to mostly work using a train that made a tiny circle (tiny relative to the map--24 units against a cylinder that was 4000 in diameter) and its vector easing properties.

However, I was unable to find a speed at which it looked right, as if it moved too fast it felt like you were in a dryer, and too slow it would look like it was laggy.

I suppose if I were to revisit it, I should increase the speed to a value such that it looks ok, at the expense of having the terrain change more rapidly. After all, on maps where there are trains they tend to come and go in the space of seconds.

A space themed contest. Any gamemode, any size, just the theme must be space.

Void maps - make a map that's seemingly floating in a void of some kind, or otherwise surrounded by instant death. Examples would be a map set on top of a mesa, surrounded by cliffs, inside canyons walls, on a giant flying battle ship, (so falling would mean dying) surrounded by lava, etc. Idea being to balance the threat of falling with weapons such as the air blast or FaN, theme is less important.

The Artpass Contest has generated so many amazing maps, and, even better, new themes. However, only one of the maps will be played. So, for the next contest how about the members use the ideas and asset they created for the Contest and use them to create a new map. A lot of the contestants will do this anyway (I hope), so why not make a contest out of it? For fun, there should be a few extra rules such as the map must not be a Attack/Defend CP and must not have any death pits. :p

Or, to include more people, the contest could simply be about creating a map with a theme not featured in Team Fortress 2.

I like this idea.

Going with "inspired-by-the-artpass" thing, I've got a two-parter idea.

In the first part, players are to try and block out the best map possibly. Just like any other mapping-from-scratch contest, except no detailing. When it's done, the votes are put in, and the winners selected.
In the second part, players get to choose from the top 3/4 of the first part and artpass it. The only stipulation would be that you can't artpass your own map during the second part.

Here is my serious suggestion for our next contest.
I heard a lot of talk about wanting a KoTH contest... which I detest, not liking the KoTH theme, as it is grossly overused. Okrag mentioned that he wanted to use up all the gameplay modes in contests. Here is what I made of that:

Contest, 1-CP.
Simply put, this map has 1 Control/Capture point. The goal is make the best map in one of of the two variants of 1-CP: Attack and Defend or a pseudo-KOTH mode in which the first team to capture the point in the middle wins (the point obviously having a very long capture timer).

I'm aware that the second of these variants is dodgy, as I'm not sure if there is a way to put a cap on how fast a point is captured (i.e. 10 players can stand on the point, but it will only go as fast as if X players were standing on it)... But I see no problem with 1-CP a/d. Most people will agree, the best part of a/d is the last point, for both defenders and attackers.

Hope that idea sails well.

Since the contest is over I thought I would make my voice heard when it comes to the next contest... For the love of god no more gimmicks!!!!

We have already done...

3 CP A/D, 1 stage PL, PLR, CTF A/D, "comp" ctf, and "artpass".

That leaves...

3 stage pl, 3 stage cp, 5CP, TC, and koth

I left out arena because well "5:53 PM - Matt: No one plays Arena"

I don't care what mode you pick just pick one of those 5!

We could have a 3 stage pl vs. cp!

Or even a comp Koth/5CP contest

Or even a TC contest! (Just give us the freedom to make it non standard TC IE PLR TC)

Please I am begging you guys enough with the "gimmicky" contest and give us something well establish and most important of all... FUN

or wait for the next mode that should pop up in a few weeks
How about no?

If I can use the PLR, A/D CTF contest as an example, using a new mode can be a bitch because no one knows how it works and the contest ends up taking ages to finish the contest.

Look I just want something thats going to be interesting without being frustrating.

Also:

I am 100% sure that this falls under the gimmick category nicely and frankly its not something I would ever want to see as a major contest but as a mini contest maybe.

People will be able to figure out how it works if it works.
Also, there weren't many valve maps for a/d ctf when the contest was announced.

As a new-mapper with a map already in development, and will probably stay there, but i have learned a lot making it...

I would love to be able to do a smaller map design contest, like a 3 stage A/D or pl, or plr... I could think of just with pl/plr a ton of things that would be fun and interesting (at least in my mind)

TC, 3Stage CP and 3Stage PL would take FOREVER to do. You thought PLR and A/D CTF were bad in terms of contest length?

I wouldn't mind KotH, though. Not 5CP, and not "comp". No "comp". Ever.

Though single-stage PLR would be interesting... if not a retread of the previous contest. I dunno what else there is to do, except maybe single-stage A/D CP.

I wise someone or other once said that server admins hate multi-stage maps. Are you sure that even considering those maps are a good idea? I quote, "... it's just three rounds of ragequitting."

Don't get me wrong, I love A/D, but...

For bias reasons I would recommend single stage A/D, but the artpass contest already stole that.
