The Summer 72hr TF2Jam Showcase!

Not everyone could have their work showcased. Neither iiboharz or I made it into the showcase. That's the barrier of entry, the post was long and the list of entries was longer. I'm not disappointed at all, this was an event for fun, why be mad? The number of awesome things created is staggering.

I really wish we just went back to a contest format and just tried to find better solution to the playing process.
This format leaves you super dissatisfied if you don't get in the showcase and you are left with no feedback, information or gauge to see how well you did compared to the rest of the entries.

I sorta agree with Wilson, the contest made me wanna make this best thing I can trying to make a better map then everyone else. The jam made me lazy as I don't have to put as much effort in. I miss the contests as they gave us a lot better selection of maps, and forced people to improve. Im not saying the jam doesn't do that, I'm saying that the contest helps to push people.

I think a better idea would be, Instead of everyone getting a medal. Say like The Top 10-20 submissions get a award, this would force people to try harder and not spend a few hours then submitting.

Oh, well... mine didn't make it in either, but that's fine, next jam I'll just make something better! :) It just inspires me to... OH who am I kidding with this positivity nonsense? If I still had a heart it would be broken right now. I'd say I'm used to disappointment but that would imply that there was a period in my life where I wasn't disappointed. Etc.

On a more serious note, we can update our jam maps now, right?

E: Oh, and obviously, thanks for the showcase post. Even if you broke my heart. You monster. (Channeling GLaDOS tonight.)

So the only thing that would incentivize you to make a good map is a silly medal and the feeling of superiority over the other people in the jam? It sounds more like an issue of not having your own standards for working rather than actually thinking having a contest is a "good idea". It's pretty selfish to only want the contest for *you* to be able to somehow "map better" with a reward that isn't even intended to provide anything other than a little medallion showing participation. Push yourself, don't let contests push you.

I would say the showcase is good enough, or people get something special for getting in the showcase and there should be judges who determine it. Otherwise they could do something with this concept in a "contest".

with the jam now accepting multiple artforms, I don't see how you could have a competitive element and keep things fair.

I want to see tf2m thrive and I think having broader events that reach out to multiple forms of community created content is the way to go.

This is exactly our logic! And it's not like we don't run competitive events at all: if it's important to you to beat other people, there are other opportunities.

As before i'll be putting up specific threads for "what should we do differently next time" soon.

If the post isnt used ill just delete it, but I think this thread shouldnt be for debating future events.. Its to showcase and congratulate (and be salty aparently) over those who did top notch in the TF2 Summer jam.

@LeSwordfish - Thank you and everyone involved in holding the jam. It was my first time taking part, and except for the moment on day 2 where nothing i planned out seemed to work, i enjoyed it a lot.
Yes, i'm a bit sad that Bloodshed wasn't part of the showcase. I thought i had a shot even with all the fantastic submissions in there, but i trust that the team has a way better overview in what was submitted to the jam than i'll ever have, and the stuff in the showcase does indeed look gorgeous.
So go, you glorious 500+ content creators. Take it as a call for improvement, turn your creation into the best you ever produced over the next few weeks, and stomp everything into the ground in the next jam. It's gonna be glorious.
