The idea of a combined artpass and popfile contest would be great. From just one template MvM map, you could get a nice variety of different themes and playstyles.
The original MvM contest gave you 2.5 months to build a complete MvM map from scratch, so you could probably make do for this hypothetical contest in 1.5 months, maybe 2.
As for rewards, I'd be cool with something like a couple months of Donator on the site, which were part of the prizes given out for the original MvM contest too.
I would be okay giving out games / hats / other monetary stuff too honestly. As well as something to do with the site would be cool too, but i would have to ask an admin.
You can use Birthday for any contest you want and I would encourage heavy modification. I was actually trying to build that in a vague style so Rexy could do whatever he wanted to it, but that fizzled.
Just came up with this one:
Size contest!
4 different categories:
512x512 (very hard)
1024x1024 (hard)
2048x2048 (medium)
4096x4096 (easy)
The challenge would be to build a map that fits within those size constraints, with no limit on height.
The harder the category you enter, the better the payout.
I think it would be interesting to see how people handle this, and i feel like we all might learn something!
As Mark Rosewater says: "Restrictions breed creativity" !
Bit late for that, but maybe for next year. Maybe for early next year, so Valve doesn't waste their time trying to build a map of their own (I'd always wondered what, if anything, they'd originally planned for 2010 before Mann Manor got handed to them on a silver plate).
