Circular Holes

Use the arch tool, make a 360 degree circle (not filled in) fit in your hole. Then go to the vertex edit tool and select the edge vertices and drag them out to meet the outer walls.

I can't seem to do that. In the vertex edit tool, It won't allow me to drag the sides. When I switch back to the selection tool, It deselects the sides.

you have ctrl(CMND) + shift + C which is hammer's cut tool, if you want to make holes. Two cylinders should fix your problem, one to form the base ring, the other to be enclosed and act as the hole. I hope this has helped, but tube tunnels are a real pain in the ass to make, and I wouldn't worry till the beta life cycle of a map... for obvious reasons

Do not do this. Don't ever do this. The carve tool may seem like the easy solution, but it tends to split brushes in a rather unsightly manner when dealing with anything more complex than a rectangle. See the difference between a clipped arch (left) and a hole carved with a cylinder (right):

The best way to get a circular hole in a square brush is to use vertex edit or the clip tool on an arch. Keeping your brushwork clean is a good habit to develop and allows you to more easily edit your map when you start testing and iterating.

As everyone else said, do not use the carve tool. It causes nightmares in the facade of an easy way out. For the future, try and plan in advance that you want a hole or a doorway somewhere, so you can create it while making the brushes for the first time instead of later. That's moreso for doorways though.

The carve tool is rarely a justifiable tool, remember the words of the Black Mesa devs circa 2008 or something:

Everytime you carve, you make a hole in your map.

Though, carving can be used to quickly create square holes in a square brush that you were going to fx up later. Carving is a weird tool, and I guess the only reason it is in Hammer is becuase it was in GoldSource Hammer wich had it becuase every other Quake editor at the time (when Hammer was Worldcraft) had it. For some reason.

The concept behind the carve tool is good. Use an object to punch a hole in another object.

The execution however, is not good. At all. It's like the opposite of good. It's absolutely and utter *insert bazillion word long curse word here*.

The carve tool is in a tough spot. Sure, it is easy to generate the new faces. It is also easy to determinate which brushes need to be changed. The problem is the non concave rule. It is forced to split brushes. As has been shown in this topic, there are many ways to do the split. It's a tough task to program, especially if it has to be generic enough to work in any situation.

Vertex editing isn't about dragging sides; it's about dragging corners. That's what you're doing wrong.

Hmm, All I'm trying to do is patch up the bottom of a MvM bomb hatch, so it doesn't look weird from the bottom. On the map I'm working on there is a room under the bomb hatch. I might just try to make a 360 Degree arch big enough.

If you get us a screenshot of the grid and 3D view we can probably assist a bit better. The more we know and can see, the better we can help. :)

This is what I would do. Now I'm not sure how large that prop is in the middle, so you'll have to adjust the hole size accordingly. But brushes can go through the prop without any issues, so I'd make sure you just size it up right. Make four sides angle as shown (good brush etiquette) I kept them seperated so you could see them better, but in the end you'd push them all together. Then make a circle arch that is 12 sides total and then adjust the size of the hole to match the prop hole size. Use the Vertex editor to pull out the corners of each part like mine and you'll be golden! Should take about 5 minutes tops. :)

You'll click the tool I highlighted in red on the left and then click the white corners which will move each one individually. Since there are two corners on each point, you'll have to move both to their respectful position.
