I much preferred the city. Like, loads. Even just as an idea, this feels like the center of the city.
I tried the city, and I tried the lake with the dock. didn't really end up likeing either. Yea, they both looked nice, but neither of them made me go "damn, I really like what i've done here." Maybe after I finish this I'll do themes for it or something.
BETA! -confetti- I'm excited, are you? BETA 1: - after much deliberation with myself, I have added an alpine-doublecross-esque skybox. - detailed spawn rooms - clipped where I was told to - clipped where I was not told to - added a custom soundscape - had a celebratory "Easy-Mac n' Cheese" Download Here I stuck with the alpine, doublecross theme over the city theme. For a few reasons. 1) The city theme would be tough and there are not enough good textures to make it interesting. 2) I'm not skilled enough to make custom textures, nor did I want to have them made for just my map. 3) from what I was doing with the city theme, it was very dull and monotone. I didn't like this. I didn't say to myself "Damn, I think this is sexy." I then looked at other skyboxes, and got the idea from doublecross (who's detailing I love). When I made this skybox though, I'm pretty happy with it. Maybe after I do rc1 I will make a city version for shiggles (I wanted to make an egypt version), so we'll see.
Whilst i 100% agree. Most players don't notice and the affect of "OMG IT' S THAT ROCK BUT AS A CLIFF" is lessoned if they're used at a greater distance and in combination with more other details. We recognise it because we use it as level designers/modellers, and as i said, it annoys the hell out of me too when i see people do it. But it's amazing what i've seen mappers get away with along these lines.
Honestly, I would do displacement hills, but those cliffs are just a silhouette, whatever can be seen doesn't look like a rock cliff. the one I originally had that you could see I replaced with displacements.
I am going to be honest but i don't like the alpine version of the map, you had urban themed map and you suddenly changed few textures and whole theme outside the map. Now you have a good looking urban area middle of nowhere with unusual looking cliffs. It just looks really strange, you should try some other theme combos, this one is not really that great.
I hear what your saying. Have you been ingame with it? I think it looks fine and so far you and sword the only person to have something against the alpine theme (disregarding rexy and grazr for their rock arguements, thats about a part of the theme, not the theme as a whole). I would like more feedback before I redo the skybox again. @grazr, I did look at those.
Basically, redoing all but the vista from the skybox, and I'm making the map a bit more deep, and a bit more doublecross meets pipeline meets bob-the-builder-esque. here's what I hve so far:
Thats about all I'll add for now in the actual map, the rest will be in the skybox. I think I have enough that I looks like a construction site still, but if not, I know what I would "deconstruct." I already have a plan for reds side that will be "construction" like, so that'll be good. I'll make sure to optimize well now, especially with all the added detail. the lower left front-lot area will be redetailed a tad also. its kinda dull now. EDIT +1 to you for the Daft Punk Avatar.
ok serious feedback while the little construction site out in the mountains was totally fine and very sweet, i think you've made the right choice in not slipping like hardhat. Be the little arena map that is in the gigantic bustling city being built up
I was going to add the industrial, but keep the mountain/cliff in the front. See Doublecross from what I'm attempting. EDIT: ehh, idk, we'll see where this ends up.
