Should we keep the thanks system?

Welps I now have been thanked over 1,000 times! :O

However, this has made me want to reflect on whether we really need the thanks system. So I give you this simple poll and a question; should we keep the thanks system and why or why not?

(Oh and a cookie for the first person to get the title reference.)

As long as people thank things that need thanking it works. Unfortunately I got more thanks for posting:texlock::dispcollapse: than for making novint posters.

Yea, i see more "Thanks" being handed out for "witty one liners" than actual informative or useful posts.

As with any system it has its pros and cons.

I kinda want it to stay because it lets people know to some degree of accuracy who are the more helpful and intelligent users around here, allowing people to gauge advice and recommendations against others. But at other times it's way off and its purpose is redundant.

For example Flame has a positive thank ratio whilst Shmitz has ".5", i'd hate for someone to be misguided by that fact and end up taking Flame's advice over Shmitz's (advice and subject with standing). New users can't tell that the majority of Flame's "Thanks" have been from witty jokes at Selentic's expense or generic posts in Icarus's map threads whilst Shmitz's "Thanks" have come from helpful tutorials and well articulated responses to contraversial debates.

I thought Thanks was just a way to agree with someone without needing to make an unnecessary post.

Thanks is fun because it's so ambiguous what a "thanks" means. It could be someone agreeing with you, appreciating your post, mocking you, pretty much anything. Sometimes it's hard to tell!

It was fine until you showed up and started thanking every other post and set a trend. (half serious, half joke)

This.

The thanks system was great until you started abusing it.

I shan't vote since I believe the system is fine, but you use it as an e-peen increaser.

We have no discouragement for useless posts unfortunately, and there are way too many.

The problem with the thanking system is that it is currently used like the reputation system on SPUF, which I am not sure if it is meant to be. Thanks certainly indicates useful posts, but there are quite alot of PHISHANGS BURNS to be had...

EDIT: Thanks for all the fish is a reference to the book/movie Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, where the dolphins sing that while leaving earth.

I WANT MY THANKS NAOW!

I think TPG made this thread because he overtook me in posts and is fast approaching Youme's mark but is mad that he'll never dethrone us from the Top Thanked list so instead he's trying to get the system removed. :D
Now watch me get a bunch of thanks for this dumb joke.

When I say there are too many rubbish posts. I mean like #12 and #13

but your thanked value will still be low, which is how many posts of yours have been thanked by others.

Who cares.

I don't think anyone actually goes "whoa that guy has more thanks than that other guy, therefore he must be more trustworthy." It's really just a way of saying...well.."Thanks!" without having to do a pesky post saying the same thing, which has probably saved thousands of useless posts.

aka what has already been said
