its a texture used in the underworld in viaduct_event.

use the word "event" in the texture browser and you'll find it.

edit:
random displacement detail thing.

this april fool contest is somehow encouraging me to push my displacement-fu and environment-fu to new unheard-of levels. :-\

This is adorable, mappers freaking out over basic shapes.

Go pick up blender or any other decent modeling package. These would take you like a minute to make, as an added bonus they'll be like 40 tris, instead of 800.

Sel, I think people are freaking out because this is made in Source, not in a modern 3D modelling program.

Last I checked you can put models in source. Also it doesn't take a modern modeling program, these shapes are so basic that you could have easily made them in 1995.

Man, I'm so guilty of that - trying to use displacements or brushes for what should be a model. The last few weeks I bit the bullet and got a free student version of Max. Modeling really isn't as hard as I thought it was, just a little daunting with the whole .smd/.qc compile stuff. Once you get past the pipeline the first time, it starts to become a lot more natural.

Yeah, the pipeline from any modelling program to mdl is a bit bothersome the first few times.

also, this if you're using 3dmax. You are quite welcome. :)

If you have any knowledge of how subdivisions work in 3d modelling programs, the same is approximately the same for subdividing displacements in source.

7 brushes, displace the appropriate sides (not the top), then just press the subdivide button. in this case the buttons/actions are simple, but requires knowledge of how the subdivide function works, and intimate knowledge of displacement-fu.
