How do you make water in a map?

Everytime i do it, I doesn't look right...

Do i just put the water brush in a canyon then put a nodraw round the canyon or i'm Applejack_bucking_tree_S3E8.png the wrong tree?

Make a brush out of nodraw, then apply the water texture to the top face. Congrats, you now have water. Make sure you only have one visible surface rendering at any time or it'll break. Also make sure that the only way to get into the water is via the top surface (the one you covered with the water material). It'll also break if you don't.

But next time, try the Valve developer wiki (or just Google itself) for simple questions like this, it has been answered a bazillion times already. Here's the VDC article on water: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Adding_Water

You are wrong about the one surface thing. The rule is that you can't have multiple levels of expensive water in the same PVS.

The "Requirements" section of the linked article covers this more accurately.

Anyways, best video that shows the creation of water ever:

From now on I'm going to say "Applejack the wrong tree".
