When you say 'adjust the tonemap slider', you're talking about the one that shows up when you select a camera in the asset list, right?

Because I've messed with that slider and it does absolutely nothing for image quality on my system. Is it a setting that only applies when rendering or something?

Yes. That slider will adjust the exposure of the shot, you might have to remap it's range to get it to give the values you want but the default should do for most purposes. It may be like focal distance and only show up when you're in the clip editor rather than motion or graph editor.

Also if the map isn't using HDR it'll do fuck all.
