Our resident investigator Barnz has done some more digging in the Source Filmmaker script files, and he's uncovered probably some of the biggest news we've ever reported on our site.

He's found many more references to a "Source 2", but not just one vague line like our previous entry. We're only one file deep, and already it's clear that the references to "Source 2" are indeed referring to a next-gen engine that Valve is currently developing. I'm only going to show one line in this post, but there are about 60+ references here, and this one line is probably the most telling.

There are references to Source, Hybrid, and Source 2 in this file. We speculate that Hybrid is the base for which Source 2 is sitting on. Barnz also says it looks like Source 2 is using the same pipeline as Source, meaning that it will probably be keeping its .BSP level format. We haven't found any references to DirectX or OpenGL yet, or Episode Three for that matter, but we're still investigating.

The Ep3 reference from before was just a comment, so it's unlikely we'll find any more mentioning of it. Source Filmmaker was in development parallel to Source 2, hence why these script files have so many references to the new engine.

Valve wants you to know that they "don't like to brag, but Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there. And it's about to get even better."

Another member from Facepunch, GameDev, has pointed out that there are some new "Source 2 tools" icons stashed away in the SFM files. Here's a preview of a few of them:

There really is nothing to get excited over here. They've already said they're spending a crapton of time and manpower developing their current tools to be more friendly to both themselves and any developers who want to license their engine. So the new hammer icons, whilst the images themselves are new, are not news.

Source 2 is also not news, it's just a name, a name isn't news. For all we know it's just the working title until it's released and they can add the correct year to it, like source 2007 or source 2009. Or it might be their new more formalised engine for licensing which is really just source 2009 but tidied up.

I cannot stress enough: A development codename is NOT news, stop getting over excited.

What YM said. Plus the fact that Valve tends to just slowly change their engine over time, they don't really do major engine steps like Crytek or Epic. I mean even goldsrc to source wasn't a major step. The very reason they have those stupid names is because it wasn't.

Those icons excite me more than anything else. Between them and the extra SDK that came with Source Filmmaker, I'm hoping for a cross-platform, Qt-based, unified SDK that supports every engine from 2007 onward and actually provides the necessary files for stand-alone mods. A new engine would be neat, but we kind of get one of those every year, and without good mod development support it always just means their newest game looks a little prettier than the last one.

i mean why would a dev bother typing out that source 2 is nextgen in a comment that is addressed to his own colleagues

one would think that a new engine would be a common knowledge among its devs

though maybe im just being way too suspicious

When I saw the first comment, I was like "pfft... programmer joke" but then I saw how many more references to Source 2 were in there and figured nobody, even at Valve, would pepper their code with that many joke comments.

Still disappointed that they're not planning to call it "ReSource", though. 'Cause that's what an engine is. A resource for game developers.
