Fit For a King

When WETA Workshop first approached us with the idea of partnering some of their IP with ours, we couldn't believe our luck. These were the guys who made In The Name of the King, after all, and since that movie stars Burt Reynolds, there was a pretty good chance they'd introduce us to him. Eager to raise that chance to 100%, we sent them over a contract demanding they produce Burt Reynolds at any partnership meetings.

Their lawyers told us they'd actually made some different movies about kings: Return of the King and King Kong, neither of which feature Burt Reynolds in even a minor role. We got less excited, then briefly more excited again when we remembered that King Kong stars Tony Danza, then into a tailspin of depression when we realized we were thinking of Going Ape.

Luckily Greg Broadmore, WETA Workshop's mastermind behind Dr. Grordbort's Infallible Aether Oscillators, sent us over a bunch of concept art for cool-looking space guns, which cheered us up immediately. We asked if he could redraw the art so Burt Reynolds and Tony Danza were having a gunfight in space over who would be our best friend. He said sure. Then he never did.

But just because Greg Broadmore is a liar, that doesn't mean he didn't invent some nifty-looking guns. Find out more about them here, and read a comic we wrote about the items here. Or you can skip all that and go watch Smokey and the Bandit II here.

Is this just for the Solly or is it going to be for everyone?

Soldier's got too much stuff recently...

Looks like just for the Soldier.
Looks... Overpowered. D:
Easy to craft, too.
Cow Mangler: 1 Black Box, 1 Reclaimed.
Righteous Bison: 1 Battalion's Backup, 1 Reclaimed.

E: Bullets are slow; Cow Mangler has 5 shots, then reloads by pulling a lever on the back 5 times. Bison has a similar slow firing speed and a similar reloading sequence. Bullets are team-colored. Rocket jumping is possible.
All servers are empty, so I'm going to test them against bots.

EE: No knockback, firing speed is slow, reload is slow, bullet speed is slow. Those appear to be the only drawbacks. The Bison is good for damaging large groups of enemies close together without dispersing them, thus allowing for all 4 shots to do about 15-20 damage to each enemy. When you kill someone, they get burned to a crsip a la getting hit by those glowing energy ball things in Half-Life. Rockets do about 40 damage per hit.

When has a weapon been released recently that wasn't discovered to be OP when in the hands of players who can actually play. Honestly, the beta testers must be droopy armed children (as Yahtzee would say).

However, the loss of splash damage and knock back is probably more significant than you first realise, unless it remains. It doesn't say whether it does or doesn't in the weapon stats but that's the only thing i can think of that would really balance these weapons.

Let this be made clear right away : As of now, the only downsides this weapon has compared to the rocket launcher are that 1) it cannot crit, at all, 2) does reduced damage against sentries.
Everything else it can do at least as well. Rocket jumps, splash damage, ammo loaded, damage done.

Also charged shots can sap sentries (temporarily), and apply afterburn to thse few who survived the initial shot.

Not very practical to use in a fight because it takes like a second to charge or a little more, and you move at like scoped sniper speed while charging.

rocket launcher gets a free extra rocket + that minicrit thing which is cool. total upgrade. no grazr it cant be kritzed - prolly a bug.

pistol is alright, kinda underpowered. should have no falloff from a distance like the flaregun. also does like <1 damage to sentries rofl. really dumb that they made engy hard counter it.

my fps is terrible. D:

either remove the 5th rocket and maybe nerf splash a little bit or totally commit the the superrocket and give it -50% damage but full crits from the supershot (so 150% damage with the full splash though). give or take a few upsides/downsides.

and yeah pistol should have no falloff or buff the damage a tad. don't really know. a lot of fun though.

Problem with the new launcher is that it suffers majorly against sentry guns. Also, getting caught off guard while charging spells death.

TF2 RUINED FOREVER AGAIN (except it isn't)

I like the new pistol, it needs to be better though. I like how the damage depends on what direction the enemy is moving. 2-3 hits for running at you/strafing, 4-5 hits if theyre running away.

The damage is 12 per hit i think, it needs to be 16-18 and have a faster rate of fire.

Using it with the krtizkreig is awesome

Finally penetrating multiple targets is a feature

It is super fun, it should've stayed with the sydney sleeper because that was super fun FINALLLLYYY

I've found the rockets to be a tad slow (although that may be just due to my coming from the Direct Hit) and hard to get kills at range. Firing speed is also slow, and Engie and a decent Pyro both are hard counters to the rockets, making this an impossible weapon when it comes to assaulting Sentry nests.
The super-rockets take a while to charge, and while they are charging, they can't be canceled. You're committed. This is annoying, as you move at the speed of a scoped sniper or revved-up Heavy, and a Scout can easily spell the end of you.
It's best to fire the super-rockets from a safe distance to a place where you know the enemy is going to be in about 4 seconds, like a central CP or something similar. Assuming you hit an enemy, they will be set aflame and a considerable amount of damage will be done, killing the weaker classes and weakening the stronger ones.
The pistol isn't bad. I rather like it. While I agree that it can't hold its own in a fight and that it needs a damage buff, it is useful to weaken groups of enemies clustered around a single point. It also appears to do damage for every tick that the projectile is inside an enemy, so while an enemy charging at you will take ~15 damage, an enemy standing still will take ~25-30, and an enemy backpedaling will take ~40-45.
The pistol's weakness is a small clip size and slow bullets. The clip is too small and the damage is too little to really give one a chance of repelling an enemy if your rocket is empty, so a buff either in the damage or clip department would be appreciated.
Both weapons are better on defense than on offense, as they focus on either driving an enemy away from a point/hitting an enemy that walks into the bullet or weakening a group of enemies standing on a point.
Once the novelty of the weapon wears off, I may switch back to the Direct Hit, but I may keep the pistol if it gets a buff in the coming days.

I wonder if this stuff is only from the first rocket. Since there are 3 (Barnblitz, 2fort and Badwater)

Actually that's a good point. One rocket crashed near Soldier. This is probably trivial but I'm going to say that this was the Badwater grocket. More lasers to come? :O

Better be something in it for Engineer

The pistol is fine (may need a buff though).
However, the Mangler is problematic. Not so much the stats, but the fact that it's FPS intensive and there's really no option to make it less so (Aside from modding). Soon the novelty will wear off though.
Soldier really needs to stop getting new items.

I don't own a tinfoil hat, so I'm not going to speculate on whether or not there are going to be two more "grocket updates" (though it would be only fitting and fair to give something to the Engie and Pyro along these lines).

However, I must say that, of all the new weapons ever added to TF2, the Cow Mangler is the only one that actually made me say "This is bullshit" out loud the first time I played with it.

I don't care about it's no crit downside or the reduced damage to buildings, or even that FPS gobbling particle effect. What we now have is a Rocket Launcher with infinite ammo that can sap buildings from across the map. Cheap. As. It. Gets.
