arena_luxdeluxe - Microcontest 14 entry

Features:
  • Randomized direction and time rideable hazard train that opens alternate route
  • Capture point arrives on rideable hazard train from random direction
  • Funny death pit cliff with a precariously positioned health kit ;)
Geo completed in just under 4 hours, logic completed in 8.5 hours (train is pain)

People said that the gameplay got a bit stale near the end of the playtest on the microcontest test day, so I decided with the suggestion of others to add a new route/area.

Changes in a2:
  • Added completely new sewer area with multiple entrances and a water hazard
  • Fixed kill trigger sizing on trains.
  • Fixed undiscovered issue where trains could cause players to get stuck in geometry and props.
  • Added in basic soundscapes
  • Removed clipping on rooftops that should have been walkable
  • Fixed up some other clipping

Minor revision since feedback round kinda borked the test and I'd like some more feedback. No real geometry changes.

Changes in this version:
  • Fixed clipping
  • Increased control point cap time from the standard (oops, left it on default before)
  • Fixed control point name (was the default TODO string)

imo raise the sewers and merge the exits with this route. would allow for more interesting routes and also simplify your stairs into the basement elsewhere.

I was considering doing that originally but the only issue was that the ceiling of the sewer area would be very low, especially where the train tracks are as that is dipped down a little bit :(

That's a fair point. I think you could make it work if you did something like this:

If you drop the cliff platform another 64 units and merge the pipes into the ground a bit, you can get a 192 ceiling in the sewer area with 64 units for the ground above it. On the small side, but not out of the ordinary.

New layout change! Kinda!

Issues with previous version:
  • The stairs going down to the sewers around the mid building were clunky because you had to turn around twice.
  • People could also fall off the stairs above and take fall damage.
  • People felt the drain pipe hazard was a little cheap.
  • Small ammo packs made Engineers very sad.

Changes in this version:
  • Changed the clunky sewer stairs at mid with a drop-down into some water. This should negate the fall damage issue. It's also placed in a way so that you can't fall in it on accident.
  • Added a platform at the end of the drain pipe to negate the hazard a bit. This platform has a staircase that leads up to a new building on the cliff. You may now slide down the sewage pipes mostly carefree! Whee!
  • Lowered the cliff above the sewage pipes a little bit. You can now jump from the staircase to the drain pipe and on top of the cliff.
  • Added a new building on the cliff on each side that connects with the platform that goes down to the drain pipes. It also has a little hiding spot.
  • Added some fences near the cliff. It's still dangerous, mind you.
  • Moved some pickups.
  • Increased size of ammo pickups. Engineers rejoice!
  • Added some arrow signs to show players routes. Also added some lights to attract their attention.
  • Added JimmiJam posters. Very important.
  • Changed water in sewage pipe to a brush equivalent to prevent rendering issues due to water planes at multiple heights
