Those buildings look quite combersome (sp?). I suppose it'll look better though when you flesh them out with character. (prop windows, roof slats, vents etc).

Info lighting would also help.

Why is everyone so bloody quick to dish out info lightings???

If anything you should be telling people to light their maps properly rather than create a dozen exceptions to the lighting rad works out.
I trust mangy knows about the extra compile commands and he just hasn't used them yet to reduce compile times. I also trust that mangy understands that these commands light props properly rather than using a single points source for the whole prop. I also trust that mangy understands that info_lighting entities are far better suited for prop_dynamic rather than prop_static generally

Serously though, stop using info_lighting entities or even telling people to use them and start lighting maps properly.

I think the building in the middle here (the big warehouse) could use some more height, especially on the near/left side. Obviously you're not finished detailing it yet, but something like smokestacks or an attached water tower would look really nice. Obviously whatever it is would have to fit the theme you're going for with that building... I was just thinking of tall structures. :D

I am slightly stumped with that building, as everyone seems to have noticed- it lacks detail because of this. I'd rather it be more wooden, but it's hard to do something that large convincingly with wood, so I've gone through several revisions of it, with different profile types. If anyone is willing I'd appreciate a paintover on that building, or several, to see other takes on it; I can't guarantee I'd do any particular rendition but it would help my detailing efforts :)

It would actually make a good barn if the roof was changed to a gambrel running the length. Many barns are built on hills like that and would have similar door placement. Here's some source pictures.

This is the gambrel roof. Adding a silo would add height and a small bump-out structure would make it more interesting without changing how it plays.

Here's a barn from similar perspective, except it doesn't have the gambrel, which is generally the defining factor of a barn.

Many barns also have cupolas, which would be another easy addition for detail.

I'd sketch it, but I think you get the idea. ;) Disclaimer: I live in Wisconsin, so a barn is naturally the first thing I thought of. :/

I was thinking the orientation of the barn should be the other way, like below. This would allow you to scale the roof a little better to fit the overall size of the building and surrounding buildings. I think my silo is undersized compared to the building, but you get the idea. :) You could also put a cupola at either end (each 1/3 in) and make them functional, which means light would actually come in from those spots into the barn. Same for the hayloft door on the near end.

While I like the various barn concepts that have been proposed I'd be concerned about the barn clashing too much with the surrounding architecture. I'm afraid it would look out of place. grazr's concept, on the other hand, appears to compliment the other structures in the area far better.

I wouldn't mind editing a map file that contained only the building and seeing what I could come up with. Could be a fun way to distract me from the requirements of my own map.

How's the map coming along, Mangy? Your last detailing update was 5 days ago, so I was just curious if you were close or not. :)
