The Mappers Medallion, what it is, and how to get it.

It's aliiiiive! After many emails with valve, I've got them to put the Mappers Medal into the game! (1/17/2012)

What is it?
It is an in-game medal (misc item) to recognized those individuals who have contributed and achieved great things in the TF2Maps.net and TF2 Mapping community.

Why do we get it now?
Valve forgot. ***As in, this was supposed to be added after the Artpass contest, and Valve "forgot" to add it. I've reminded them about it... and now it is here!

When do I get it?
Not sure yet. The medal is now in the game, so I'm going to assume "soon"

How do I get one?
Well, the staff have talked over the requirements, and we have concluded the following guidelines:

• All artpass entrants will receive their long awaited medal of recognition for entering the 2010 Artpass contest.
• All top 3 winners of ALL major mapping contest will receive a medal. (This is retro-active, so contest past, present and future will be honored)****
• Those who the staff consider to have made notable and significant contributions to the TF2 Mapping community. We have not finalized the list of people who will get one.

I will field questions. (But no "DO I GET ONE!?" questions. If you fall into those req's, you will get one)

**** Contest that are not included are BATT, both 72hr contests and the assignment frenzy's, etc. It must be a MAJOR contest.
**** And my reasoning on why the artpass people are getting the medallions 1.5 years later
**** Another note, this medallion was NOT guarenteed to the artpass members before/during the artpass contest, it came up after.

Please everyone keep in mind that the notable contribution category is the exception rather than the rule. Very few people will get medallions in that category.

Only Contests run by the website itself that say 'Major', no site run mini-contests like Ravidge's Assignments or member run contests like the koth_grid artpass contest

Why are the artpass people getting medals 1.5 years later?

I have been asked this a LOT already and have heard both sides of the argument. When I first emailed valve and mentioned the medallion (I did not mention the artpass at all) I was in the mindset that it was for the artpass entrants. If I could get it into the game, I was going to get it into the game for the artpass entrants (minimum). I was offered the chance to make it bigger, to hand it out to more than just artpass entrants. So I did. I talked with nine, ravidge and okrag and we agreed upon the requirements that you see in the OP. The medal was originally intended for the artpass, I upheld that promise, but made the medallion something more than just that. The medallion is something that we can now use to distinguish notable achievements within the community.


I understand people might be upset by this. But this will not change.

The fact that others can win this misc slot item in future events is great and anyone who wants their own personal medal is just plain selfish and deserves a slap.

Yes, I have received complaints from people saying that people who entered an incomplete artpass "low quality" entry will be getting the medallion ... but that some people who have contributed a lot to the community, but didn't win any contests, or enter the artpass, won't.
