I'd c&p the full exception, but it won't let me select it, much less copy it.

Apparently some people have had problems with Kensington mouse drivers that crash when they try to install certain apps or with certain installers.

If you can, un-install Kensington Mouseworks and use only the default mouse drivers. (Look at it this way: If those drivers do turn out to be the real problem, they're better off gone no matter what kind of extra-button functionality they might add.)

****ing mouse... that's exactly what it was. I renamed the driver and the install worked just fine. :\

Already knew Kensington was a total POS and was planning on replacing it. Now I guess I need to stop procrastinating.

Glad that's solved, and I guess I'll finally stop procrastinating and look into the hammer crash issue tomorrow. It certainly isn't a "crap" system thing, schwa, I'm running 2.5 ghz single core and 2 gb of ram :p

I haven't been able to find any obvious correlation between Cinema and Traction (Wander's and TPG's maps), though at one time I did successfully load Cinema with the prop library... no idea why it worked, since I hadn't done anything to either, but that was once out of countless crashes. I really don't know where to continue my search, I guess I'll have to try some random shooting in the dark.

Tried loading the library and then one of the maps?

Thanks for trying, I will also try removing things from the vtf's (using a text editor), to see if I can find anything specific that causes it.

Alright I kinda fixed the crashing problems by removing most of the new props. However, if I opened the library first then my map hammer would crash. But if I did my map then the library everything is fine.

I have a bad feeling this crashing problem will only get worse as more and more content is piled onto the game. It may or may not be worth making 2 prop libraries; one that houses commonly used props and the other that houses less commonly used props.

NOOB QUESTION:

What am I supposed to do?

I want to make an Arena map. How do I do? First I tried to open your gametype library and by hand delete every part that wasn't related to Arena. But when I tried to run the map I could only get as far as to the class selection screen.
I discovered that you could double click on an object and click "copy" and "paste" to get a copy of that object into a different map. So I figured I was supposed to copy and paste everything that had to do with Arena into a new map. But I couldn't copy and paste the trigger_capture_area. So now I'm stuck.

So I guess my question is "How do I use your program-thing?" (don't know the correct term)

Sorry for being a noob but I started making maps earlier this week and I have very little past experience with 3D-modelling or programming.

Thanks in advance!

Also, sorry for crappy English.

Basically what you are going to want to do is when you open his library you are going to uncheck all the visgroup boxes EXCEPT for the Arena one. After that is done in the graph screen drag a box around the entities to select them and ctrl+c to copy. Press ctrl+n to open up a new hammer graph and ctrl+v to paste it into that new area. Now you have all the basic entities to make sure your arena map "runs".

After you have that done you are going to want to create a very basic block layout of your map. After you have created a nice blocked out layout you can place the point where you think it should be and then start slowly making the layout more detailed. Making sure to make ANY small tedious pieces func_detail by press ctrl+enter as long as they aren't making it so you can see the void(black area) When you go to test your map to make sure you don't get any error or "leaks" you can use the cordon tool located on the toolbar at the top or make a giant hollowed out box around your map for the time being. Also make sure to add 1 respawn player position if there isn't already one for each team so that way you know where you will spawn in at at level load.

Now, if you load your map, you will notice the server will keep you in the spawn area as it waits for more players to join. Open up the console and type sv_cheats 1;bot. This will add a bot to the server and let you playtest the map.

Thank you so much!
But now I have another problem. I created a map for Arena that just was a big room thinking I would insert textures and scenery later. I playtested the map and everything went fine (except the capture point being covered with purple squares). I exited the playtest and added some textures and playtested the map again, but none of my changes to the map were visible. I added more things and playtested again but the map I'm get to play when i playtest my map is still just the big empty room.

Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

First, make sure you're compiling again after adding things ... :p

Then if it's still not working, run your compile log through here and see if it spits out any errors. If you still can't figure it out, try posting the log here to see if anyone else can find the problem.

Like the above guy said, make sure if you add textures models or do any layout changes that you "re-compile" the map. If you don't do so and just load the map back up you won't see a lick of difference. When you recompile the old map will be rename with a _old after it if I remember correctly and the new one will have the correct name. After you recompile so you don't have the purple squares you are going to want to make sure that you have the console enabled, if you don't check back in or google how to enable that, it's very simple. Once you load the map up you are going to want to open the console and type the following in. exclude any <'s or >'s they are just placeholders

-mat_specular 0
-buildcubemaps
-disconnect
-mat_hdr_level 0
-map <mapname>
-buildcubemaps
-disconnect
-mat_specular 1
-mat_hdr_level 2
-(load different level)map <mapname>
-(load your map again)map <mapname>

After doing all that(make sure you do them one at a time) and reload your map you will notice that all the reflective surfaces including water will have reflection and this is the only way possible to get that done. You can also check out this link for a more in depth tutorial about what cubemaps are and how they work: http://tf2maps.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4530

I'll get an update out with the new stuff sometimeish. Still getting my system back to where I was after an MFT corruption on my system disk. Though, it seems nobody cares about the new stuff much.

Well, it's not exactly hard to hunt down. ;)
