Valve already does weekly playtests of dozens of custom maps (have been for a long time).

This. I'm surprised by the stupid in this thread. How did you people figure SPUF users were going to get their terrible ideas all over the game? Or that the map contribution thing you have in mind will do the game more good than the community map system? Valve does know about Cashworks and Frontier, but not Ampersand's improved Grenade Launcher model. No offense, but even the allegedly elitist Ubercharged wasn't this overdefensive.

I mean, I'm pretty sure it's not called 'upload' when you submit a piece of text.

I'm not all that sure you actually have to animate what you're making.

Sorry I can't help you with anything Blender-related.

I don't see whats so bad. I hope they amass many aesthetic variations on all the weapons and stick them in the random drop system. That sounds great.

The only thing they're still failing at is awarding the elite players (besides the community weapon idea, which is pretty cool).

I would want a clientside cvar so that if a Demoman gets a reskinned "Rusty Eyelander" or a Medic has the chrome Medigun I can just see the normal versions.

In whose interest is it to officialise a great map everyone already plays? My guess is that the amount of people who will start playing the map will be small compared to its established fans and those who will just go back to Gold Rush.

They made egypt and harvest official, now we have a greater asset pool for custom mapping. See koth_giza, pl_pharaoh...

Custom maps just come and go, unless favoured by the competitive scene. So do community maps, actually. Who plays hoodoo anymore?

The competitive scene is tiny compared to the pub scene. I can't see how the competitive scene keeps custom maps going, particularly when they refuse to beta test them.

Well I think arena_watchtower is fun because I play scout, but if you've ever played it 30+ times, you'll know that it only caters to very few classes in very specific places. You are either a sniper or an engy if you want to play by spawn, engies can double as a cap camper. Scouts have the ENTIRE MAP aside from the cap covered. No other class without a medic stands a chance, except maybe a scout vs. heavy 1v1. All other classes are only useful camping at the camp (which is unbelievably campable), aside from the adventurous medic or spy, who can only survive outside because they have cloak.

Harvest I don't hold too much of a grudge against, in fact I don't hold anything against it.

Fastlane is without doubt the ugliest official map ever, and in some parts I honestly wonder what the mapmaker was thinking. I.e. the two spawn doors to the final caps, not to mention the map is uncreative and the middle point is a joke.

My final grudge is against offblast, which isn't a very fun arena map purely because it forces the player into a very limited area and into specific routes. It's only survivable with a medic when you're a heavier class, or to the good huntsman sniper or the sneaky spy.

SETTLED.
