People didn't get completely aesthetic items. So what.
If someone being exploited had one ounce of common sense they would leave the server and find another server.
Maybe if they had more common sense they wouldn't bother with limited-use aesthetic items and would play TF2 not HF2.

Well if you think about it, the situation goes the other way too. If those items were so worthless, then why were there server admins who decided to go to extreme measures to obtain them? So much so that Valve had to make a blog post about it?
1. Person joins server
2. Person waits 2 minutes for gifts to spawn
3. Gift spawns
4. Admin takes it
5. Person has to disconnect and find a new server
6. Admin stole 3 minutes of person's time
"Hey, you're not allowed to have fun! Stop liking what I don't like!"
I've got a few protips for you.
1. Calm the fuck down.
2. Respect others' opinions
3. Don't get mad because someone has a different opinion.

well, in valve's philosophy, gifts are supposed to create value for your player base. if you're taking all the gifts with noclip, mass slays and other stupid plug-ins, you are being a dick to your player base and you're taking away from the value of your server to satisfy your own greed. what I'm saying is you're hurting yourself, not valve. and valve doesn't want you to hurt yourself because you're hurting the community as well.
valve is giving you free value for your server to help driving in traffic an you're just taking all of this value for yourself. valve only wanted to make a better community by increasing the value of each server.
sure it's your server but you're being disrespectful toward valve, and yourself. these admins should be ashamed

My argument was never entirely against valve (although I find it hard to agree with some past decisions), most of what I said is directed towards the playerbase that constantly find ways to work "the system" and get hats and whatever. I suppose this is just me, as a player who joined the game when there was only one hat for each class; it was a cool and neat thing to have one but for the most part no one really cared, core gameplay was the big interest of players. As the game progressed through updates it got crazier and aesthetics became more entwined with that TF2 was. Nowadays gameplay modifications and balancing rarely happens while adding an aesthetic item is commonplace. I don't mind if people find hat fortress 2 fun, that perfectly fine with me, but I personally would rather play good ol' TF2. Maybe I'm just bitter that the cool, unique TF2 that I once knew still exists albeit under a pile of hats.

Surprise tf2 has turned into a game where people are obsessed about collecting virtual items, and people will behave without regard for the fun and feelings of others, if it means they get a better chance at getting items.
This has happened in every past update where it's been possible, and really shouldn't surprise anyone now.
I don't really understand why every time someone expresses an opinion on the state of tf2 that you don't explicitly share you stick your fingers in your ears and start screaming because you don't want to hear. If you want to do that fine, but do you really need to post about it every time despite it bringing nothing to the thread?
