Detailing Mini-Contest 2014

Rules and Information | Upload Thread | Voting Thread

It's that time of year again, where you bust out your creativity, break free of the contraints of "layout," "sightlines," and "optimisation" and create the best damn looking TF2 scene you can. This year is a bit different, and I'm increasing the size of the area you have to work with, so go nuts and do something really special. Good luck, and happy detailing!

Winners:

First place:

A tie between:

FAQ:

What can we map?
You can map anything so as long as it abides by the rules. Take a look at the previous contest winners for some examples.

Does the 3d skybox also have to be inside the 4096x4096 space?
Yes, the skybox must fit within the limits, however remember that there is no limit to height so you can put it above or below the map safely.

Is it okay to have props slightly sticking out of the 4096 squared area?
Yes, however as the containing bounds of your map must contain exactly 4096x4096 (or less) area, any prop origins which are outside these bounds will leak! And that won't be good! So keep your origins inside this space for your sake.

Will sound in the map also be judged as detail?
The judging process at the end of the contest is essentially players wandering through maps and voting on whichever they liked best in a forum poll. So you should add anything that would help give the illusion of the scene (so yes to audio, animations, etc).

Can I donate to the prize stash?
Absolutely you can. It would be much appreciated.

Format of post shamelessly stolen from Egan and TPG

Since sound/animations are allowed, can I have interactive things like buttons that activate things, or no?

A few questions:

Is there a starting date, or can I start right away?
Do I have to utilize the whole 4096x4096 area?
Can it be interactive? Buttons, moving parts, etc?
And what does it mean by TF2 Styled? Does that mean it has to fit in with the theme of TF2, or can I make something a bit different like an underground temple or futuristic city?
And could I use a picture like this, http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/236x/49/5a/81/495a813baa9101a87b7ffc6c7c626e5d.jpg in my map, or would I have to design all textures by myself.

Question:
Is recreating locations or scenes allowed? I'd love to redo the Noodle-Bar from the movie braderunner with some obvious changes, or giving crash-cove (from CTR) a tf2-revamp.

I totally don't play CTR on my laptop on the bus everyday or anything. Honest.

Anyway, this seems like a contest I might actually attempt.

4096x4096? That's double last years size and it seems a little excessive for a "mini" contest like this.

It's just to allow flexibility and to mix it up from previous contests. You don't have to use the full space or cram details into every part. I simply wanted to see what people could come up with with more space :)

Since sound/animations are allowed, can I have interactive things like buttons that activate things, or no?

I have no problem with it, but remember that people probably aren't used to buttons doing things, you'll want to do your best to make it obvious or some people might miss an important part of your map!

You can start right away.
No you do not have to utilize the entire area, the point of increasing the size was to allow flexibility and creativity.
Yes. See above.
It just means that it fits with TF2's art style. ie. not HL2 realistic textures. Underground temple futuristic cities are fine!
If you're converting it to a texture yourself that's okay, but keep in mind something like that is "breaking out of the tf2 style" as mentioned above.

Of course. An artist who says they don't use reference is a lying artist :p

Are we solely devoting ourselves to one basic scene? Or are we just making crap but playable maps that look fantastic?

This is something that I was wondering when the last Detailing Contest happened, but will the judges have Max/ Ultra settings enabled? It seems like it'd be pointless to judge a map solely on looks and be running it the game in DX8 with sub-minecraft textures. (Not that I have anything against that)

So, based on what I know, we're making a big lump of amazing detail, with no gameplay implementations?

Works for me!
