There's very little time. It's the end of term for me, I have exams, and there's barely any time to do any mapping. That's why I said mid-july :|

This exactly. Plus, understanding that a lot of people are out of school now, having it on monday-wednesday instead of over the weekend just seems ridiculously thought out and unplanned.

So yeah, I'm not entering, purely because I CAN'T enter

Technically it's impossible to set a date fit even for majority, mainly because it's an international community and secondly, made out of people of all ages.
It's just this kind of contest, you either got free time or you got to sacrifice everything else in order to enter.

If you can't then the 'casual' contests are more fit for you.

Moral of the story: We need some way of identifying the best time for everyone to enter contests. Forum threads and chat messages just don't cut it.

Perhaps a regularly updated thread, pinned somewhere highly visible, where people can post their available dates and they are all assembled into a table.
e.g.
Name|Dates (DD/MM/YY to DD/MM/YY)|Days (M Tu W Th F Sa Su)|Exceptions
Mick-a-nator | 27/06/11 to 27/07/11 | M Tu W Th F Sa Su | Not 05/07/11
| 28/07/11 to 31/8/11| F Sa Su | -
etc. | | |
Major contests would obviously get priority of choosing dates, but the choice isn't so critical, as they take place over longer periods of time.

There are of course flaws to this plan, but its either something like this or pages and pages of arguments again.

I spoke up and said it wasn't the best for me, but I will be missing only about 24 or so of the 72 hours which is still plenty of time if I work hard. To everyone else who can't enter this one, I'm sure we can arrange another in July, on a weekend.

I was thinking about hosting some short 5-hour layout map contest... I also have an idea for a detailing contest we could do that is short(ish)... so if I have time/money you should look out for that.

Well, for me these 3 days actualy work quite nicely. I wouldn't have entered on a weekend probably (or would be mapping drunk/hung over :D)

Considering how random my schedule is, I don't mind this mid week thing, even though I'll be missing for half of it, and I won't be sleeping the other half.

I'll enter even though I've got school, I probably have enough time. And if not, the point of this contest isn't really the prizes, there is value in trying to make a map within the 72 hour time regardless of the context.
Although there is more motivation working to an external deadline, as well as the motivation that comes from the competition.

Why not just use the honor system? "During the month of July, start a map sometime. From the point you start that map in Hammer, you have 72 hours to finish said map. When you are finished, submit the map, that map will be considered 'final'. After the deadline, blablabla, judge the maps, blablabla, Zwiffle wins."

That way people just map whenever is fine with them, and who really cares if someone fudges the limit by a couple hours or whatever. I think the quality of maps will be higher if people have more choice in when to map, and their schedules are clearer for something like this. That way, almost everyone is guaranteed a weekend in order to get some mapping time in, there's no complicated tables, and everyone is happy. Yes?

Because then it is impossible to have control over who is following rules who is not.

That's a moot point, because I could easily take a scrap I'd been working on in order to get a head start. You have to use the honor system for that rule as well. I doubt many people here want to actively cheat on an unofficial 72 hour contest. Besides, if you reaaaaaally care that hardcore about it, force people to show daily pics, submit daily versions of the map in their thread, and then 72 hours after the thread has been submitted, lock it out and take the latest submission they have. But really, why all the fuss over a casual contest? It's not going to produce the next greatest map or anything, it's just for fun.

The reason these mini-contests are important is because it helps us as mappers not "lose our touch" and a lot of people use these contest to start the basis of new maps. Coldfront was started because of a control point design contest, icarus's points took 1st and 3rd, And those because the final points and mid point of the now official, coldfront.
