i use cinema4d, pretty intuitive modeller, and also very handy when it comes to uv-mapping :)
only downside is the the only freeware smd-exporter can´t export animations :/
if i have to export an anim, i export to i think fbx, import that in 3dsmax and export the animated smd from there

I've used XSI and 3ds Max, and there is no comparison between the two. 3ds is a hell of a lot more intuitive and powerful, if you can get a hold of a copy go for it.

The only thing I don't like about 3ds Max is its UV mapping, it's finicky and more difficult than it should be (XSI's is better).

edit: I've only used Maya for maybe 5 minutes, so I don't know much about it. But from what I hear it's comparable to 3ds Max in quality/power.

One issue that's pretty important is the legality of selling your models. To my knowledge, Blender is the only free program where it's completely legal to sell your work. XSI, while free to download and use, won't let you make money off of using it unless you buy the full thing. Likewise, if you don't actually legally own your copy of 3DS Max, you're kind of screwed.

ever wonder why tf2maps doesnt have a model/texture discussion board? granted i know the site is specifically for maps, but if its gonna carry custom models and textures shouldn't it at least have a place just for organizational purposes?

Because if people want to talk about them (like this), they post somewhere anyway, and thus far there hasn't been enough discussion to warrant it's own board.

maya.

i like the interface best, and its still the most powerful and extensible 3d app out there. i'm more of a technical tinkerer than an artist, so i get into the scripting and UI modding and such, and maya is the best for that.

the polygon modeler in maya has always been a weak point, its decent now, but still has its quirks. for straightforward low poly work, 3dsmax is kinda the industry standard.

Trouble is, most people don't think twice about breaking that kind of law. I made sure of blender's lisence before I chose it, I can sell stuff i make in it, so it's all good :D

Does anyone on here use VIsta 64 and Blender? I cant seem to download it from their website I get this weird error

You don't have permission to access /blender.org/release/Blender2.49a/blender-2.49a-win64-python26.zip on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I've been wanting to try modeling too...;)

I use Blender and have Vista 64bit(didn't have any issues with the download though), and have used Lightwave in the past when I was in Highschool. I also have a copy of 3ds max(*cough*torrent*), but prefer Blender though I have not modelled much.

Max works extremely well for me- seeing as Autodesk now pretty much owns EVERYTHING 3D, they have no excuse not to be extremely good, if not the best.

I can't say "the best", only because I haven't had much other experience. I was trained on 3DS Max and just haven't had the need/urge to try other programs extensively.

I will say, however, BLENDER is the way to go IMO. And go EARLY, cuz at least for me, the UI and controls were so much different from 3dsmax that it was very tough to get used to. So make it your "first language", and you'll have no problem! It is an amazing program, and completely free! woot!
