Sooooo, after this horrible polycount pack thing, i decided i shall go back to random propery again :)
I was watching the construction vehicle thread with lots of interest and always wanted to try another vehicle but just couldn't find some appealing reference pictures that didn't include heavy creative thinking (which i'm obviously terrible at).......blabalblalblablalb....... So today i stumbled upon totally awesome tonka toys reference pictures and decided what would be more logical .............blablalblalbalbla........than save these and let them cover in dust and start a small prop within the construction theme first.
So here i go after lots and lots of reference collecting, a first wip of the simple concrete mixer. on youtube i found a kinda funny video of an old concrete mixer that had some quite heavy bumps in it. i'm gonna try that as well and see if it fits. if not i won't show :D
So without further gibberish, the picture:

My masterplan is to finish this piece first to get some more practise and then hopefully do "some" (pronounce: O.N.E.) vehicles on this beatiful theme.

It looks like it'd belong in TF2, just needs something to make it a little more run down. Maybe some wear and tear around the center band and some dried concrete on the leg to give it that "just like old" feel.

sweet! Is that yellow baked into the texture or a viewport screengrab? I like the richness of the yellow - how it has an orange tinge? neat.

inline with nerdboy's comment about giving some of the texture a 'used' look - perhaps you could also experiment with the posing to pull it a little away from the 90deg position of the cement barrell.

long live the TF2 construction site!

Awesome, I was going to try my hand at a construction theme one day. Might come in handy! :D

You should tilt the mixing "bowl" a little. It's usually facing a little upward when you use it.

EDIT: Looking at the concrete mixer in my backyard, the "blade" inside of it looks quite different from your model. I suppose there could be variants, but maybe look at that as well.

thanks for all your feedback, guys !

the added concrete is a great idea, nerdboy. but i think i'll do that inside the "thing" and leave the legwork to the mapper, i think ^^
one thing i've learned from the tons of reference pictures. it all comes down to how people take care of their mixers and clean them up :D
for this one, i didn't want it to look totally messed up. more like the welding machine. a tool that is used but taken care of :)
so i imagine some concrete/cement strokes here and there but delicate (i like that word )

UGLYdumpling, it's just a render (skylight, 2 omni lights blue and orange) with colored materials. no texture yet :)

Muffin Man, go and make a photo of the inside :D
There's obviously plenty of variants for this and this was the one i noticed in a youtube video of a vintage mixer and decided to use it. But i'm all open for changing blades !
And i think i'm really gonna rotate it a bit upwards, so people passing by can see some dry cement, maybe. Gonna see how how things turn out after cleaning up the model mess i made :D

Still, tilt it upwards. Not even Monk would leave it at a perfect 90 degrees.

yes for sure. it was just for uvmapping reasons to keep it straight. not so much fun when something is rotated ;)
actually i'm kinda done with the uvmap and hope to get it all sorted out within the next hour. uvmapping sucks....

Alright, after heavy fighting with the notsocleanaomapbaking i managed to compiled a quicky :)
Note: this just some basic AO bake compiled. no single brushstroke whatsoever has been put on the model so far :)
color scheme will be like the welding machine - orange and babyblue

and there goes the babyblue. muffin said the back is kinda flat. i originally planned to just put 1-2 stickers on it. we'll see if that does the trick or else.....well...i could live with some flat back :D

Idea: perhaps make it two props so people can angle the pot whatever way they want? (even pouring out, with a hardened concrete displacement hanging from it) or maybe to give a little variation if you have more than one.

looks great, a bit of wear and tear would be nice and some hardened concrete on it.

are you close to being able to show us a version rendered in game

It seems like a useless bit of extra work for the mapper.

yeh, i know, unfunny sign on the machine ;)
will try do compile it into a "proper piece of map" to show the scale and how/if it fits into the game. then upload and release time \o/
and i didn't want it to be totally damaged/wear and tear-ish all over the place, so it sneaks nicely into the background of a scene. just imagine it being used only a couple of times ;)
next up is something else *hidinghidinghiding*
