Just look at the trailer for bioshock 1 where one guy gets gored through the center by a drill. It's brutal.

All actions have an equal and opposite reaction. If somehow a 150 pound man (without some sort of support) held a 100 pound drill and used it as a weapon, it would be placing as much force on the 150 pound man as it is on whatever he's using it on, causing him to move backwards, and causing the drill to be deflected. Newtonian physics beats sheer awesomeness.

Now, you can have your gun fights, and still be able to have a good ol' fashion knife fight.

Never bring a gun to a knife fight.
Never use a knife in a gun fight either.

No matter what, you're screwed.

This is true. Neumatic drills don't drill the earth by the person pushing down on it, they do it under the natural force of gravity.

On the other hand, you're a big daddy. Your standard machine gun is a minigun, your grenade launcher is a cannon, and your crossbow is a spear thrower. So really, it's kinda irrelevant, because it's just something which causes massive damage when shoved into someone's chest.

And bioshock is totally based in reality with it's unraveling underwater city and people addicted to a super power causing drug along with giant scuba suits with people grafted to their insides.

Stop being naive.

Ouch.

Besides, it doesn't cause "super powers", they're not super because everyone has them, AND it just alters genetics (you don't know it isn't possible unless you've tried), the "unravelling underwater city" is perfectly possible, just slightly impractical (assuming that lighthouse is there for uptake of air to stop people from dying from asphyxiation), and grafting people to their scuba suits isn't entirely impossible, you know.

Besides, even if it was, that still doesn't change the fact that super strength scuba-suit wearing whale-people could hypothetically wield giant drills effectively. Assuming there was such thing as a scuba-suit wearing whale-person.

I'm not sure how I'm being naive. I'm just unsure why you are saying that the drill is unrealistic when it's obvious it's in an unrealistic game. I'm not being willfully ignorant, if that's what you're implying.

The drill is awesome and it kicks ass.

Just imagine what would happen if you supported that gunsword from underneath. There IS some force pushing downwards, sometimes, and that hand wouldn't be usable for a while. And if you tried to shoot without supporting the barrel, your hand would get fatigued really quickly and you'd get massive recoil.

What I love about this is that you're paying attention to the gunsword an how it'd fatigue your hand and not the effects and plausibility of the HUGE cannon on his other arm :p And Nerdboy, that guy must be an expert at peeing one handed, especially if he's right handed.

Not to mention it must be pretty hard to keep those muscles with a hand like that.

Caliostro beat me to it.

Von Nuemannic drills don't even push, they just make grey goo all the way down.

When it comes to melee weapons, I think a lot of it would depend on what type of enemy you're facing. In pre-gunpower pre-crossbow cases, your choice of weapon may vary quite a bit depending on how many enemies you expect to face and whether they'll be on horseback, etc.

But yeah, that's not an "awesome" melee weapon, is it?

Forget "gun sword". I want a sword or halberd which uses gunpowder or jet engines to propel it and cause it to swing into the enemy.

That said, are we allowing mutable weapons in the Terminator/Diminutive-Fictional-Alchemist vein?
