In all earnestness, I'd love to play Ravine as a 3 CP map. I wouldn't be able to get my community to play it otherwise...

2fort Night is popular on a server I go to, and it really enrages me. I don't even mind 2fort every now and then, but have you ever seen 2fort Night? It's so poorly lit and there's flickering lights that are pretty much seizure machines. And people LOVE it! It's been around for a while, though.

The worst part of the map, though, is that the mission briefing says "GAMEPLAY CHANGES: None, it's perfect as it is ^_^" and everything about that down to the emoticon fills me with fury.

The thing that brings it down is the ''it's perfect as it is''. Me and him have different meanings of perfect...

Any world brush faces touching another world brush face or the void are culled during compile, so it really doesn't matter what texture is on all those "inbetween" faces. (same goes for touching brush faces within the same brush entity) It could be that they all the more familiar with their own engine along with not wanting to waste time on needless things, so they don't bother with them.

Yeah, but don't those "inbetween" faces that touch exposed faces generate shadow, and add to the lightmap size of your map?

Faces that are culled no longer exist, so no, they can't be lightmapped. You aren't fully understanding what I said. world faces or faces within the same entity are what cull each other. If you have two brushes in two separate entities next to each other, they won't cull. But if they are the same entity they will.

Are you guys seriously bothered about this? Now of course, people will make slight alterations to maps and go "whee it's a new map", but decompiling Valve maps was always a great way to learn how things are done. Now it's just made easier.

Here's the problem: Previously if you wanted to release a Valve edit, you had to find a decompile, which A) are buggy and B) usually stored on mapping sites like this, and so plastered with "For Educational Purposes Only, Do Not Recompile And Publish/Upload Unless You Want To Be Known As An Idiot" labels. Now, everyone has it on their hard drive and shouldn't break if recompiled. Plus, no conscience labels. Result: hundreds of 2fort edits, and TF2 custom mapping's reputation gets even more worse.

It's an issue of principle. I mean, they are almost saying "We release unfinished maps. Here you go compile it because, hey, you can probably do as good a job as us."

I mean, are they confident in their work or aren't they? Can a map ever now be considered finished? If they're confident, why are they giving the audience the option to twiddle with it?

I wonder if it isn't just a way to try to sell more copies of TF2 as, to actually make your own map is just too hard for so many people out there... *sob sob* You might have to do some work to get something that looks like a real map.

I think Valve just wanted to let their fanbase play around with their maps. I also think the conspiracy you made up about Valve's insecurity is a load of crap, and you're taking this too hard.

orange_x is the most popular custom map. I'll argue against any idiot who tries to call it a good map, but I won't sit there and tell them they can't have fun on it. It's one thing for a guy to make a few edits to 2fort and call it a masterpiece, it's another for them to just say, "hey, I know some guys who'd think it be fun to play 2fort with cookie monster in the sky!"

It reflects on the community, but the only one who would judge negatively off of that needs to pull their head out of their ass.

If someone wants to make a ctf map with the cookie monster, let them pay their dues and make a full map plus a cookie monster. It's not negative to expect a party to pay the price of admission and do the work instead of taking the short-cut of using someone else's map. Or maybe you just let anyone off the street use your property. I know that when I release my map I wouldn't tolerate anyone decompiling, adding the cookie monster and recompiling - because I didn't put the cookie monster into it.

Chill out guys. People can release all the valve edits they want, they're just not going to get noticed. On sites like fps banana I've hardly noticed an increase in edit maps.

TF2 mapping reputation? Puhleeze. That's just something you mapper nerds here are worried about, nobody anywhere else cares about it or has a negative impression of tf2 mapping.

So I decide to see what I missed in the "TF2 News" forum and the second thread on the list what is this I don't even

I'd bet 10 bucks FPS is reduced to 0.01 once entering the corridor in ''balanced'' version of 2fort!
So is this paypal or something, or are you going to send me a check?

Yeah, I made an error, forgot a 0 before the 1... What I should've said was 0.001 FPS/sec! I'll send your prize ASAP!!

If Valve didn't want people re-releasing their maps edited, they would have made it so people couldn't compile it. I'm pretty sure Valve likes when people release "balancing edits".

That is a very good point Ninji.. But it annoys more the mapping community of TF2Maps then Valve to see recompiled Maps... We don't really care about what Valve thinks of their updates after releasing them but we care about the fact that we are going to get tons of recompiled valve maps on this website and it's a thing that we don't allow.

That's why this update is somehow disapointing cause it affects the community, not valve. Instead of spending their time making useful new maps that valve has a tiny chance to accept (still biggerthen recompiled valve maps), they spend it changing stuff in valve maps! That's why it was a bad idea to release them...

If Atleast they made a random map that would never get in TF2 and include everything that a map shoiuld have in it (Areaportals, skip, hints, models, brushes, etc...), everything would've been better!
