What do you guys think of this? Supposed to be one of those oil drums that hobos use for fires. Figured it's relevant enough to cold weather, and it could be used for a lot of other themes. Still pretty tri-heavy, I'll take it down once I finish some stuff up with it. Currently in the middle of a 72 hour map contest worth of school work(Same sleep schedule just nowhere near as fun) so I'll get back to working on things sometime this weekend.

Just a screenshot from Blender, not HLMV. Also, not too knowledgeable about mapping, should I add an attachment point for particles or are those placed in Hammer?

An attatchment point is really only nessecary if it's a really small model (like the lantern) but there's usually no harm in adding one.

More importantly, do a lot of skins, those really help prop reuse for barrels.

And in either case, an edit of the existing barrel might be a better idea than a totally new prop. Just, you know, in case someone ever wanted to have them in the same scene.

Except it can't be a prop_static anymore and cast real time shadows (if not disabled) instead of cheap lightmap shadows. So I recommend not adding particles, so mapper can also choose if they want them in the first place

Is it in the scale of the 2fort oil drum or the gorge toxic barrel? I assume the barrel, but it's hard to tell.

Decompiled 2fort oil drum on the right. Again, model isn't finished yet and the texture is just some quick base colors and gradient.

Doesn't the swamp pack already have an open edit of the original oil drum and corresponding fire particle for it?

Its the same prop as the 2fort one, with the inside added and without the top lid. And yeah there's a particle for it. I figured my oil drum is different enough. If not the mapper just doesn't need to use it.

Work from tonight.

Bark is just fake_wood001, an actual texture would be much better.

Snow seems kinda weird on this one. A normal map oughta do it some good.

Yeah but that one doesn't have the iconic charred, falling-apart top that people associate with hobo-fire barrels. We need one of those, probably more than we needed one that was just open.

I still don't like this snow, need a better way to do it.

You do know thats hammer, right? And what do you need that many pixels for anyways? Most people won't even know it has that many in the first place.

At the very least that deserves a proper texture. It's currently just the AO laid over a floor texture. Even with the texture compression it won't be hard to get something better than that muddy brown mess. The model itself is alright. I'll continue with mine, I want to have it be modular so you can stack it on top of itself if you want to make a larger stack.

On the subject of trees, that'd be cool to see some tall pine trees with snow. (darker bark, not the lighter toned pine trees we have now)
