Offensive Swearing in L4D / Halflife

I'm a satanist and I'm offended when you say "stupid as hell" or "what the hell"
but you still say it.....

believe it or not satanism has nothing to do with hell, its more about doing what you believe is right or doing things because they feel good

I never inderstood why 90% of atheists are more focused on shitting on everyone else (read: christians) than just living their lives without a god, which supposedly is such an amazing thing.

This is based on the person not the religion/ lack there of. Ive seen the athiests you describe, and ive seen people who think pokemon is the work of the devil, people who yell and scream at a person who has just given their little cousins copies of pokemon, then takes them away, ruining the kids birthday.
And honestly...I can't really see how believing or disbelieving could enrich your life in any way...

I present religion to you in a 100% logical format:

Four situations:

1. You believe, there is a god, you live a happy life and end up living a happy eternal life once you die.
2. You don't believe there is a god, you live a happy life anyway but when you die you find out you were wrong and end up in eternal suffering.
3. You do believe in a god and live a happy life, but when you die you were wrong, there is nothing after death.
4. You don't believe in any god, you live a happy life anyway but when you die there is nothing waiting for you.

you completely left out reincarnation, ghost theory, and there are probably others, I demand you properly research this and create a more correct theory tree, and you left out "live a good life and move on anyways" to have otherwise would just be petty...


As for the on topic stuff...honestly, until someone said them I could not recall any swears at all in either hl2 or l4d <_<
My most common swears are "dear...god..." (spoken all drawn out), "jesus christ" and "holy shit" (up to you if you consider this religious or not)
They all all mean, when I say them anyways, "what the hell is wrong with you" or "wow" or "why..." it depends on the context.
There is no affiliation to religion in my mind when I say them, its just the 1st thing that comes to my mind.

Science explains both how and why when it can. If it doesnt, the persuit of the truth begins with scientific evidence to back it up.

Please dont mix science and religion, its apples and oranges.

What I'm saying is I can believe in all we know about science, and still believe god is behind it all. Science doesn't compete with my faith in the least bit, and I don't understand the two extremes of a) science is wrong unless it supports what is written word for word in the bible b) religion is wrong, because I can show you how something works means that it is there by happenstance rather than by design.

I don't feel a or b are the only option. I believe that god uses science to make things happen, not by magic. So what I meant by what you quoted me saying, is science explains how everything works and is based on evidence. and Religion adds meaning to things happening. now this meaning cannot be explained fully or taught to someone, neither can it be proven wrong by scientific means. This is the nature of Faith. But far too many atheists believe they can prove they are right, when they cannot, just the same as people of faith cannot prove they are right.

I think that if you are offended by swearing then just avoid it. Most games with bad language are 15+ for a reason. If you let your kids play them then thats your fault that you are exposing them to it. I have no problem with it. And as to religious swearing, everyone does it. If you are offended by it just ignore it or avoid it. Honestly I believe that religion has become outdated. But that is just my personal opinion. People are welcome to believe whaever they want as long as it doesn't lead them to harm others.

Ok let me put it this way – there are great movies out there – more old time classics and NONE of them have swearing in them.

Can you imagine some one of John Wayne’s stature saying in one of his films, “Come here you G-D pilgrim or I’ll blow your F’in nuts off!”

actually sounds kinda funny knowing John Wayne's style - but If you asked him about it the way things have been going -I think that he'd be very disapointed with it.

My now deceased dad told me how ladies would faint in the theatre when Clarke Gable Said "Damn" in Gone with the wind.

Is soceity degenerating more by the gradual introduction of vulgarity - etc? Are we becoming the frog in the beaker?

it´s not like everybody is swearing all the time, it´s on a few occasions, and it´s a natural part of being human. it´s more natural then keeping it in, i would hate a society, where everybody is huggybear and noone would release anger and pressure in a quick linguistic way, it would boil up,
swearing is an effective valve for releasing pressure and anger
surely i agree that swearing just for swearings sake is unneccessary
thats the segway to the topic, L4D has a fair and not overloaded amount of bad language. more or less would just seem unrealistic under the circumstances of a friggin´zombie apocalypse

Actually killing a zombie that was swearing at me would probably put me into a conundrum and I'd have to think about it for about - maybe half a sec depending on how many zombies wanted to eat me. However, if I was still alive - 2 weeks after infection - and still healthy - not zombified - then I would have to think that this is exactly where God wants me to be at this moment in my life and it would come down to this:

1 - survive
2 - quarentine & contain
3 - cure and rebuild
4 - explain what happened, why it happened and prevent it from happening again.

However, I do take the subway / public transit to work everyday and I see lots of zombies all the time - they're called commuters !! Occasioanlly, the swearing ones are escorted off from time to time.

I don't know if your a biologist or not but I'm an Entomologist and that's not the part that I'm discussing.

But why does Kill_The_Bug insist that I want to hear my livelyhood used as a target for killing? I've heard it a couple times now - it started with squishing a spider in the basement and I guess because there wasn't a whole amount of complaints - he only did it once and in one part of his house - I guess he decided to go the whole hog in his forum presence.

I've always considered killing bugs to be a bad habit, regardless of what squishing is used. So what makes it so important to promtoe bug killing by these internet users?

Sure it's a very violent world, but I don't need to hear the squishing constantly.

I'm sure that if they wanted to squish kittens - they'd get a much different reaction. Unfortunately, both for me TF2maps.net , this type of squishing is unacceptable to me and I feel that I have to make a stand somewhere and that is not to post on TF2maps.net or buy a subscription to them.

I'm sure that I'll be garnering some choice comments, even some potentially derogatory ones, but does squishing bugs truly enhance your life or not?

However, the article you linked is an interesting point to actually start a discussion.

when you play a game, the reason you are playing the game is for the experience of playing the game, not for the long-term consequences. So when you rescue the princess, you don't really care about the princess, you don't care what she feels or what she thinks.

When you read a book, you read the book because you care very much about what the princess is feeling and thinking; how she relates to other people, and what happens to her.

I read at least a book a week. Some fiction, some non. I disagree with her differentiation of the two mediums. Video games fill many niches for me, entertainment, creativity, and even a mild social aspect. Reading is also entertainment and educating, but the act of reading is not social or a creative outlet for me. Regardless, her point that one "cares" about characters in fiction and not video games is trivial. Our capacity to care about fiction does not validate either medium, and as for long term consequences, well, people who fan-wank over Harry Potter and Final Fantasy are equally weird.

Back to the original question, you made a choice when you bought the game, if you are offended by bad language then why would you buy a game about killing zombies? You did look at the ESRB rating right? Swearing is a part of the game, if you don't like it play something different, or don't complain.

It is swearing in many countries. It's more offensive than saying "God damn" in said countries. The Catholic Church would not have been amused. Etc.
